Repeater bridge security issue

I have set up numerous WRT 54GL and similar devices with great success in the repeater bridge mode- always with the final virtual link unencrypted but the repeating link encrypted. Recently I tried to encrypt the final virtual link and the DHCP functionality appears to stop working. Or maybe it isn't authenticating.In any case, when I turn off encryption on the virtual channel the host computer can grab an appropriate IP address and all is good. Any ideas?
