I've now sorted out the MAC addresses, used scp and mtd to flash it, and rebooted. All seems well.

What CFE did you change to make this work on a GS v5.1 unit....does your unit see all ...

So.. you can either run the cfe compressor as you stand, or jtag a compressed cfe.

backup the cfe on the box with jtag.. compare it to the cfe file you flashed (the one you backed up to begin with). The must be identical.

My guess.. you had a bad backup or a bad jtag flash.

I use Linux. I recently bricked my WRT54GS v5.1 by trying to convert its CFE to a 128k. All all the LAN port lights are constantly on, and the power light is flashing.

you may disable the "use dnsmasq for dhcp" option but i dont think that the dnsmasq dhcp doesnt supply a netmask

Actually, you were right, disabling that option did the trick. I wonder why ...

I've just been testing the Watt-32 TCP/IP stack under MSDOS with my WRT54GS unit running DD-WRT v23 SP2 (09/10/06) micro (build 3896). Apparently the firmware doesn't supply a net-mask with the DHCP ...
