with volume labels of opt and jffs if their format is acceptable.
Does this mean the volume label is crucial and it won't work if that's different or absent? |

It could very well be that the ext2, ext3, ext4 drivers are not built-in your firmware. I hate to suggest it since you seem to like the Linux formats, but you might want to try FAT32 formatting and ... |
