I can't answer your question regarding the capabilities of the OpenVPN implementation used by the GUI. The only thing you can do is try to run a custom configuration and see if it works.

In other words, you need to run it as optware to get access to options that are not available within the GUI.

Why would they turn off hardware based FPU emulation? That doesn't make any sense. Hardware based is faster than software based, and in doing so you would break almost every previously compiled MIPSEL ...
