I had issues with my Xbox and tried the port forwarding and UPnP but nothing worked until I placed it in the DMZ and assigned it priority QoS. I've never had an issue since.

If it's one of the modems with the phone connection you can remove the battery from the unit with no issues. I have done it multiple times for clients and family. Never had an issue with it.
