check your encryption. My router (E3000, which is very similar to WRT610) likes to switch the 2.4 GHz radio to TKIP, which effectively turns the radio off.

I cannot use channel 14 on my E3000 unless I stop using 40Mhz channels. I can use channel 13, however.

Switch the WRT54G from gateway to router mode, disable the DHCP server and disable the firewall. Also change the wireless channel and be sure the SSIDs are different.
