There is a difference though I will be the first to say I don't know what it is.
Tried using the 56U firmware repeatedly and it has never worked right, nearly bricking the unit in one case.

I think your issue is a matter of Linux character escapes being misinterpreted because you are using a windows path, try changing your slashes '\' to double slashes '\\'.

It varies. It is default for some but not all. It is sometimes tied to the vpn allowing lan access. I recommend you consult the vpn documentation.

As long as the vpn is configured correctly, meaning all trafic including dns queries is sent through the tunnel

The FW versions should not matter. As I said form my personal experience different device manufacturers and chipset variations yield different results.
