dl7awl, I'd appreciate if you could take a look at my post entitled : "Problem with VOIP over Satellite through WDS network.".

The question is similar but in a more complex environment.

I thought that the WRT54GL's boasted just 28mW out of the box...

84mW is Linksys firmware default....28mW is dd-wrt firmware default

....So by setting dd-wrt to 84mW, is generating the same power output as a new Linksys WRT54GL straight out of the box?
I wonder why DD-WRT set its level at 28mW?
In any event, my 300mtrs WDS link manages well on 28mW using 14dbi patch antennas, gaining a S/N ratio of 27db, and which has very few errors (as per earlier posts).

Because 84mW is not necessary in most cases. All it does is generate heat and cause higher SNR numbers in most cases. I run 28mw and 40mW on all my units and I can cover all my property with just the Buffalo running 40mW...over 300feet with 45% signal quality....I only use the repeaters to test the firmware...with the exception of the v2 unit that I use when I travel.
