Hi guys.

I have the TP-LINK WDR3600 and have been running dd-wrt on it for years. I don't have much in the way of config, a few port forwards, static leases, and DDNS, but over the years, I have become very dependent on DD-WRT.

Today, I had a new connection installed at my property - gigabit FTTP. I initially used the supplied router but after about 10 minutes I tried switching to my WDR-3600 and I have a rather large issue.

The WAN speed on the WDR3600 seems to be maxing out at around 150Mbps, whereas on the supplied router, its over 800Mbps.

I have read through a few posts and understand that this would normally be CPU restricted, but the CPU is maxing out at 22% during speed tests so I'm not sure this is the case here. I'm running firmware DD-WRT v3.0-r27600 std (08/11/15).

Can anyone assist, and is the firmware I'm on the latest/best?

Thanks

cpu is maxed, look at output of top in telnet, sirq should be eating it all. sirq isnt reflected in gui cpu usage if ur looking there at it

Thanks for your quick reply!

sirq is topping off at 77% (assuming this is just based on the refresh speed)

I guess there isn't much I can do apart from replacing the hardware? If so, any particular recommendations for gigabit lines, with decent wifi speeds, but without breaking the bank?

Is it possible to 'squeeze' some more out of it if I install latest/more efficient firmware? What's the latest and greatest for the WDR3600?

Thanks Smile

Just an update.

I've gone from v3.0-r27600 to v3.0-r29519 and the speeds have improved!

I couldn't get more than 150Mbps on any test before, but after upgrading the firmware, I'm consistently getting results of over 250Mbps. A big increase considering its firmware alone!

I would still greatly appreciate it if anyone could recommend a decent router capable of gigabit WAN speeds, and decent WiFi speeds that runs DD-WRT!

probably nothing, best to build a pc to use as a router. gigabit is hard when nat performance is all in software mode for embedded systems

I know I'll probably struggle with the full 1Gb, but I'm sure there are many out there that get close?

I do have an always on microserver with 2 gigabit ports so I could run through a PC, but I'd preferably keep it all on the router.

This shows the WAN to LAN router throughputs:
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/tools/charts/router/

I was thinking of the ASUS RT-AC66U that's rated at 836.0Mbps. I think that will be close enough, but does this have good DD-WRT support, and is there a list of router recommendation?

Edit:
The NETGEAR Nighthawk R7000 isn't much more expensive, and rated at 931.4Mbps WAN-->LAN.

forget that chart, thats for stock firmware, with all 3rd party firmwares they are much lower less than half. ea8500 has one of the best if not the best supported cpu, but isnt exactly the cheapest thing, & ud be better off with a non us version as newer us versions now have encrypted firmware meaning u cant put ddwrt on it. kong said around 700mbps on ddwrt without optimizations meaning should be room for more improvement.

This might be of use. I have tried many different options with this router (wdr 3600 v1). ddwrt / openwrt / lede / stock

everything else was bellow 200mb

Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r33413 std (09/27/17)
