Another data point, changing to Wide HT40 on channel 149 made the 5ghz point totally and immediately inaccessible from any device. The 2.4 still working fine.

Try channel 153 and Wide HT40.

This works (network remains accessible), so I will sit on this for a while and see how it goes for reliability. Thanks.

TP LINK TL-WR1043ND v1 is more flaky than DLINK DIR-825, DIR-835 A1 and WZR-HP-G300NH are.

Yes, DD-WRT v22118 is one of the best builds for Atheros. It can make notoriously-known TP LINK TL-WR1043ND and Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH run fine.

Like DLINK DIR-825, DIR-835 A1 is a crappy piece of hardware when OEM firmware is on it. It works well however with DD-WRT r22118. I have all 3 pieces of DIR-835 running r22118, 1 as AP and 2 as clients.

Thanks for the info. Is r22118 noteworthy as a particularly stable release, or does it just happen to be the one that you run successfully? At this point I think it is about 90% likely that the problem is due to hardware, but willing to downgrade if it is considered generally to be more stable for the hardware.

You might want to downgrade your version to r22118 and set the settings:

Wireless Mode: AP
Wireless Network Mode: NA-Mixed
Channel Width: Turbo HT40 (40 MHz)
Wireless Channel: 153
Extension Channel: Lower
Wireless Network Name (SSID)
Wireless SSID Broadcast: Enable
TX Power: 20 dBm
Antenna Gain: 0 dBi
Protection Mode: None
RTS Threshold: Disable
Short Preamble: Disable
Outdoor Band: Disable
TX Antenna Chains: 1+2+3
RX Antenna Chains: 1+2+3
AP Isolation: Disable

These work well for my 5GHz. I use 3 DIR-835's. 1 AP and 2 client repeater (routed). Connection from clients to AP is at 450M (goes down to 405M sometimes) but connection never gets dropped.
You might want to try r22118 on your WDR3600.

I have a WDR-3600 v1 running r29837 std (06/06/16).

I was also having issues with 5GHz band with some specific devices.

What solved my problem was disabling "Noise Immunity" for the 5GHz band in the wireless advanced settings (leave it enabled for 2.4).

The interesting thing is that this option ("Noise Immunity") does not exist for the 5GHz band on the same build r29837 running on two other devices I have (Archer C7 and DIR-859).

I am wondering that this option was included by error in the 5GHz band for the WDR-3600, and having it enabled by default is causing issues?

itll probably die again shortly..

Try channel 153 and Wide HT40.

Well I had about 6 days of reliability with these settings (with scheduled daily reboots) so I thought I was out of the woods. But then today while streaming a video (something I do daily) it conked out. 5GHz became inaccessible. Switched to 2.4GHz, rebooted, and back up.

I guess the next step is to try that other DD-WRT version.

I would recommend 06-20-2016-r29974 with a reset, and configure from scratch...

I finally got around to downgrading to r22118 as per an earlier post, and with this I can not connect via 802.11n on the 5GHz band at all. I can connect if i change it to n/a mixed, but only in 802.11a mode.

jwoods, is the 06-20-2016 beta still your recommended version, now that we are a few weeks on?

I'm running r22118 on my DIR835 and I can't connect faster than 150mbps on my Nexus 5. I've tried various settings mentioned this thread without success.
I'm going to test out a more recent build tomorrow.

Just to close out my issue -- still experienced same set of problems on an August 2016 build. Decided it had to be a hardware glitch - got a new router. Smile Oh well.

To make sure my Wireless is 100% reliable every single day, I have my router set to reboot every morning at 5:30am

If I don't do that, it lasts about 1.5 days before people can't connect, always been the same with DD-WRT

Yeah, that was one of the first things I tried, auto reboot at 4am. Sometimes the problem would crop up only an hour later.
