This a request for help in configuring a DIR-835-A1 for use as a router down stream of an ATT Motorola DSL 3360 modem. I have upgrade to firmware to 825-20119 and then to dir 825-21286.
This was done a few years ago by my son while going to college and living an a RV park and helping the owner keep his park wide wifi system up and running.
I can not describe the path that led to this firmware being loaded but it was used at the RV park and did a good job.
I have been running with an ATT NETGEAR 7550 DSL modem router and a lightning strike took it out 2 days ago. I have 2 of these modified D-link routers new unused except for the firmware changes noted above.
I have the ATT Motorola 3360 DSL modem configured and running right now to my main system PC on a CAT 6 Ethernet system.(DELL R710 server running windows 10) I talk to the dell with remote desktop from my HP portable that is connected to it through a D-Link 24 port switch.
Now the problem. I have a small amount of experience with modems/routers/switches. But when I connect the router in the system and try to get an internet connection the combination of the ATT 3360 DSL modem and D-Link dd-wrt software is not functioning.
I have spent several hours with ATT DSL tech support and they have tried (briefly) to make some changes to the setup of the modem AND ROUTER. BUT after a few tries they admitted defeat and told me to go to the router manufacturer for help.
I am looking for a a set of configuration changes that will get the ATT modem happy with the router and or new/additional firmware update to get what I have working.

Any one out there have a path I can try?

I bought 3 D-LINK DIR-835 A1 routers as I found them very good and fast compared to others in the same class. I use r22118 and r29721.

As for your setup, you have to set your ATT DSL 3360 to bridge mode and let your D-LINK DIR-835 A1 do the PPPoE negotiation with your Internet provider.

After setting ATT DSL 3360 to bridge mode, under setup, WAN connection on DD-WRT you should select PPPoE. Put the username and password of the account.

I got on line with dd-wrt.com and got the latest firmware update for the DIR-835 A1 and updated the router. I them called ATT DSL support and asked for help with the bridge mode setup on the Motorola modem from ATT. After a complete set of testing the standard NON-PPOe interface and having it fail the tech helped me set up PPOe and it worked immediately.

THANKS
Wess

It was an expected process due to the wiki's and other tools that tech support is expected to use for online support activities.

and yes you do know more.....

Please consider this next area of concern.

This is a associated issue which the change in setup has forced me to solve.
I have a fixed IP address on the net due to my having worked away from home for several years. I wanted to have access to my home system when needed.
I was using port forwarding in the ATT supplied DSL modem router to pass my external log on requests to a front end computer for my home system.
I have found the dd-wrt port forwarding. I can use the wiki to get the basics but I am looking for some guidance to avoid issues that may not be obvious. Below is a saved set of port forwarding commands I had in the ATT DSL modem router. They may not be the most current copy but they will give you some of what I needed to do in the ATT version.

ALSO AND of perhaps greater concern is security issues associated with this setup and how windows 10 may be different from windows 7 and 8.

PORT FORWRDING FROM THE MODEM ROUTER

Service Name: World Wide Web (HTTP)
Protocol: TCP
Start Port: 80
End Port: 80
LAN Port: 80
Protocol: TCP
Start Port: 443
End Port: 443
LAN Port: 443
Protocol: TCP
Start Port: 8008
End Port: 8008
LAN Port: 8008
Protocol: TCP
Start Port: 8080
End Port: 8080
LAN Port: 8080

TO THIS COMPUTER

Service Name: MOMS COMPUTER_RDT
Protocol: TCP/UDP
Start Port: 3389
End Port: 3389
LAN Port: 3389

Any comments, wiki's or other sources of guidance you might know of.

Since I am now retired and can spend most of my time at home and have a fixed IP and I would like to allow friends to get (controlled) access to my system I need to get some additional setup for my system.

I do not have a true server system. I have a Dell R710 server chassis running windows 10 and use it as my personal PC. (144G memory with 8 dell hard drives) I have 2 of R710's. The second I would like to be the front end of my home system to the world. It is not running at this time but I have all of the hardware to get it up except a fist full of 2 1/2" Dell HD's

Any suggestions?

Need to know the local IP of "MOMS COMPUTER_RDT" before setting up port range forwarding.
Check what IP "MOMS COMPUTER_RDT" has currently been assigned to.

Check it on DD-WRT:
http://192.168.1.1/Status_Lan.asp

or run this command on DD-WRT diagnostics page:
http://192.168.1.1/Diagnostics.asp

cat /tmp/dnsmasq.leases | grep MOMS | cut -f6 -d:

Thanks for the quick reply.

I appreciate the detail you are willing to jump into and cure for me. But I am pretty sure I can handle the port forwarding setup.

The forwarding list I provided is old but very close to what is/was running on the last router.

My main concern is - what am I missing in terms of obvious security exposures in that list of ports I provided and others I may have missed that are common to be forwarded. Including what has changed or added in windows 10.

I am also worried about what windows 10 will throw a fit on windows 7 8 trying to get attached via port forwarding to a windows 10 PC.

Every new operating system seems to try and lock down a PC's access even tighter. That is good but the process to allow access is not always clear or evident.
