All I am trying to do is make a wired Access point out of my WRT160N v3. DD-WRT installed, just fine.

I think we need to go to basics. I mean things like is the power plugged in. I have spent 12 hours on this, at least, and haven’t gotten it. I have tried things in at least 20 configurations. "Have I tried..." yes. It must be a simple problem; I'll try and start simple. Finding the solution is an addiction at this point.

I have a Netgear R6000 v3 from charter. It is now also on DD-WRT. It’s great! Best reception ever with DD WRT. Glad that happened. AP isn’t as much needed after that! Ha I originally tried to set up the AP on both stock firmware and wasn’t successful that’s what lead to DD-WRT on both.

I am a router ignorant, but love technology. I have watched so many you tubes and read so many walk trough’s, I think I have the DD-WRT buttons memorized. But I really don’t know what those buttons actually mean. I have 10 second reset and 30-30-30 reset and 5 minute reset. Etc. Read the peacock etc. Try a configuration and it doesn’t work and reset.... try again.
Tried Chrome, IE, Mozilla. Tried my laptop, tried the desktop, tried Windows, tried Ubuntu….

So I mentioned that the basics might be getting me. Tell me if this is an issue. Please. Reset or not reset, I can’t see the wrt1600 without an internet connection. Is this a problem? I couldn’t see it on stock or DD-WRT, without the internet. In other words, if I put 192.168.1.1 into the browser, I can get the 1600 to be a router. Like if I hook it up instead of r6000. Everything seems fine. Ethernet, WIFI, all works. But it does need the internet. No internet, no config screen. Maybe this is the issue? So to do an AP, I am trying to change the IP, which I’ll get in to, but after I change the IP I can never pull config on the router. Yes, I changed to the new IP in explorer. I have tried many times. Is this the issue? Is there some simple detail here I am missing? I’ll continue in case that is fine.
Are the routers compatible, like wireless N or 802.11A/C ? Or all those acronyms. 5g/3g. Sorry, I am terrible remembering acronyms. I mean I know the wrt160 isn’t 5g.

So the default IP of both routers are 192.168.1.1. I read some security thing that said to change the main router to 192.168.5.4. (R6000 in my case) So that is what it is now. I tried things with the default IP, and that didn’t work either. So I have tried too many options to remember them all for the AP WRT1600. But essentially I was only changing the last section. Like the 4. Tried like 5, 50, and 125. Now I am never going to remember what combinations I all tried together. But I tried just that, and I tried that and changing default gateway. Disabled the DHCP server. Disabled security. I understand the Ethernet to the AP is supposed to go in the LAN not the WAN, but I tried them both.
But pretty much, the story goes, I reset the AP wrt1600N router. Change some settings (like IP and more) can’t type in the IP and see it. Hook up the R6000 as main. Try the 1600 as an AP and it doesn’t work.
I mentioned I don’t know what I am doing, but I feel like one tutorial was going to project a signal that was the same WIFI name and log in, and another tutorial was going for a different WIFI name and different login. Neither worked.

Anyway. For whatever reason, I am obsessed. I have to figure this out. I have gotten sever 5 hour nights of sleep thinking the next try would work and not getting to bed on time. So I throw myself at your mercy, please help. It’s got to be something really basic, that I just did not know. Yes, it’s plugged in.. But its got to be on that level.

The problems I can tell from your post do go back to the basics, but the basics of networking.

Your R6000 shouldn't be on another network (192.168.5.4 as you mentioned), but it definitely needs to be assigned a different IP than the AP (WRT160N) to avoid what is called an IP address conflict.

If it were me, I would reset both routers. Then I would assign the R6000 to 192.168.1.1, and assign the WRT160N to 192.168.1.2. The subnet mask for both should probably be the default 255.255.255.0. Get the R6000 working with internet and leave it alone. Are you also using wifi on it?

Now for the WRT160N, run a cable from one of the switch ports on the R6000, to a switch port on the WRT160N. On the Basic>Basic Setup tab(s), the WAN Connection Type should be disabled. Below that is where you assign the IP address and the subnet mask I mentioned previously. Below that is where you assign the default gateway, which is the R6000's IP address (192.168.1.1).

Below the default gateway configuration is the DHCP configuration. On the WRT160N, it should be a DHCP forwarder, meaning it is forwarding the IP address leases that the R6000 is handing out and letting the R6000 take "DHCP server" role. The DHCP server is also the R6000's IP address.

Start with that, and see if that helps.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your response and help.

yes. as mentioned. I have some techonolgy learnings from playing with phone ROMS and etc. But tackling this project was a whole new experience. everything was foreign to me when I started.. I mean I like googled 3 acronyms a sentence when reading wiki's and peacock...lol

yes. the R6000 is now a beast I never knew it could be. (runs great on the default IP and the one its on now) wifi and all working perfectly. I think I have it secure, but we wont derail there.
So here is part of my issue. both routers have the same default IP.
So option 1 is putting them in series, like you stated. With that being the case the default IP only pulls up the r6000. typing in the IP brings up the R6000 how do you get to the wrt160n in series, to change it?
Option 2. is to remove the R6000 and reinsert the WRT160N and then change to the 2 in the IP. But what my trouble is, is that for whatever reason, once I do that. I cant pull up the wrt160n any more. typing in 192.168.1.2 doesnt work. I am thinking this is the root of my issue. whatever is causing this, or what i am doing.

I have not tried the "forwarding" thing. I can certainly give that a shot, after I get past the above.

For what its worth, thats why I was kinda happy I changed the IP on the R6000 thinking that would give me a better shot of acessing the WRT160N... to change it.

Thank you so much again. Hopefully stating this, you can see some dumb thing I am doing. cant state how gratefull I am for your help.

When configuring the routers, you should be wired in directly to each of them. Don't connect them together until after they are configured with different IP addresses, etc. Once everything is configured and saved, it should not matter from where you are accessing them as long as you are using the right IP address.

Configure them by wiring in, save and reply the changes mentioned on the WRT160N, and remember that by default, you access the GUI by http://<ipaddress>, not https.

ok. I have just followed this. the "long version" There is tons of extras at the end that confuse me.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Access_Point

it is confusing that it says "wireless" as i am wired.
but this gives no other option.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linking_Routers

my AP appears to be working! using wifi analyzer since i selected channel 1 for main and 6 for AP, i see two different networks and the channel one gets BIG when i get next to the AP! yay!

but i still cant go to explorer and use the IP to pull up config for the AP. Any thoughts? or just dont touch it and be happy! ??? lol

As mentioned, I have been obsessed with the project. I guess its like a puzzle game for me.
Anyway, I went to bed happy with progress. The wrt160n router was a cheap router, it was a life lesson to not buy the cheap thing... Everytime i was too far away from it. In general my main router is on one side of the house and this one is on the other, but using the wifi ap the signal strength was barely better on the wrt160n than the main.

This got me thinking, and when i unplugged the ethernet wire, it was confirmed. I just set up a "wireless" AP.

The above tutorial has some things in it i will try and play with. It mentions changing settings on the main router to be able to access the second router.

Dad gum it. Still at it.... I continue to be unable to access the AP router after i change the IP on it.

Sounds like you're making progress. Maybe try clearing browser cache or using a different browser all together to access the WAP's GUI.

What confused you at the end of the "long version" of the WAP wiki?

Well the whole thing kida goes different ways, I was fine with the "long version" section. But the section at the end "How To Use DHCP to Set the WAP's IP Address" seems like it might be relevant to my casue but that is over my head.

I would ignore it. DHCP is Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol...Random IP addresses in other words. If you're trying to manage the AP through the GUI, you'll want to know what the IP address is by setting it manually as we've discussed and the wiki explains initially.

Thanks so much! I am not sure if I even tried to click that area. Guess the grey got me. Appreciate it.

I think i am going to hook WRT160N thing up and change the IP. And not unhook it untill i can log in and change settings using that new IP .

I am thinking the route to try is a static IP. Hows that sound?

Yes static IP address for the AP, and don't connect the AP to the main router until the AP is accessible from wired or wireless clients on 192.168.1.2. Did you reboot the AP after the IP address and other configuration changes were saved?

The next post will show you were I am at, best I can. The one bit of advice that I am reluctant to do is, the IP thing. The R6300 is just kicking butt and I hate to mess with it. I left it on 192.168.5.4. I admit, I have no idea about Ip's but i just thought it convenient that i can type 192.168.1.1 and know it was the wrt5400 and not the r6300. Is this the piece of the puzzle I am missing?

Man, I am exausted...lol

I have tried so many configurations, I cant even remember what I have done.

I have always thought that It was a life lesson to not buy a cheap router, and I think i should just throw away that life lesson from 7 years ago, that i spent $39 on. and buy like a nighthawk or something.

Things I got:
I got a wifi repeater... that didnt repeat much better than the r6000.
i have gotten to where i can type in the IP and change settings, but no signal.
I accidentally plugged in the WAN and not the LAN and saw life.
Currently, I can not type in the IP, but I think I have the AP! trouble is, its not really all that great of a signal.

I just had a bourbon, I am going to bed. if you have thoughts, dont be afraid to be direct, I can take it. Constructive... but direct is fine.

I am just glad you are helping, and DD_WRT is fantastic on the R6000. so it was a win for that alone.
