When setting up a router with DDWRT for use as a repeater can you use the same SSID as your primary router? What I am wanting is, I have a few dead zones in my home and want to be able to provide wireless signal to those areas by setting up a router (same model as "primary") with the same SSID broadcasting in order for mobile devices to connect to when the signal of primary router gets down to 1 bar or non-existant.
(I want to use this for wired connection as well as extend my wireless signal)
Is it possible to use same SSID? -- I know this is a few years old, but will these tactics still work?
I have a question, reading it the first setup states
Quote:
First (root) will host internet and will have local IP 192.168.2.5 and the second will have local IP 192.168.2.25
In my instance my root (primary router) has the following settings IP of 192.168.5.1 and Starting IP is 192.168.5.2
Ending IP is 192.168.5.250 - so I would set my second router to local IP 192.168.5.251

Is that accurate?
Yes that would work fine.
Any IP within same subnet will be fine and yes usually best to set it outside DHCP range just to be sure IP is not already being used.

Also, I am running stock firmware on my root router so I do not have the option to

1. Set Wireless Mode to "WDS AP".
Is it possible to do this set-up w/o having DDWRT installed on both routers? For example, one of my routers is v2 (which DDWRT is not capable of running on)

I reckon you better stick to a repeater bridge then.
Client Bridge (Routed) on the atheros boxes --
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge
If dual band router you can bridge either one of the wireless interface and connect your devices to the other .. works well.
Or you can create a VAP on same wireless interface you are bridged with and connect to it.
There is some limitation with these type bridges and bi-directional traffic.
Normal internet usage should be fine but services/servers you might put behind a repeater/client bridge will
likely have trouble broadcasting to other segments of your subnet --
Any further help with the setup you need to tell us what router & model and what dd-wrt build.

good luck
Looking at step 6

Open the Wireless -> Basic Settings tab
Physical Interface Section
Wireless Mode : Repeater Bridge
Does that equate to Client Bridge (Routed) on Firmware DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/25/13) - the Repeater Bridge is not an option
My two routers are Netgear WNDR4300 as secondary and Negear WNDR4300 v2 as primary, I have not been able to find a DDWRT install for v2 which is why I am having such a hard time.

Use only guide in my previous post edit.
AFAIK there is still NO dd-wrt support WNDR4300v2
Try NG-Mixed
Not familiar Turbo (40 MHZ) but assume that would be HT40 so that's what I would use.
If not working well you could then try dynamic.
A lot of this is just tinker with it till it suits you -
I think tatsuya46 has that router. He may come along and give you good pointers.
do the simple first --
Should have this device alone attacthed to your computer.
Computer should have static IP set same subnet as the device so you can communicate to setup.
SSID for the bridge must match exactly as host router.
Security must match exactly.
Both need to be using WPA2 AES (OEM firmware may say WPA2 PKS AES .. that's ok)
Setup/basic setup >> gateway IP should be set to acutual gateway of this subnet (I assume that is the host router IP)
also main setup
WAN should be disabled
DHCP should be disabled
and uncheck anything under that which might still be showing.
Setup/ advanced routing
set operation mode to 'Router'
'Services' page (disable) uncheck DNSMasq
on Wireless page should be
(Client Bridge Routed)
'Default GW Mode' set to manual and put same IP you use on main setup page (gateway IP)
Check page Status/Wireless see if it is connected. If so set computer back to DHCP and should get IP from main.
If so see if have internet access. If so then can create VAP for wireless devices to connect.
Got to make a stable bridge before you worry about other. If can't do that try disable security on both routers to see if that is the problem ....
