Hi all,
I was wondering if the BrainSlayer builds (14929)are still recommended for the Asus RT-N16? As per http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=52043 and http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N16

or

ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2010/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom_K26/ to be more specific with regard to the actual files.

While I am not having any problems, I was wondering if there were better versions or if there were any issues with the build I should know about (although I didn't find any when I looked though the forum just now).

From what I understand the wiki is out of date for every router and should not be followed. Not sure why there isnt a community effort to update it.

Most here will tell you that if you arent having any issues you should not update. I think that if there is a build you should update because since 2010 there have been a lot of linux vulnerabilities patched.

All the latest builds are here - ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2016/

But I dont see a build for N16, only N15 from Asus. And from reading that post you linked it sounds like it needs a special build? So there is a chance no one has made a build for it since 2010.

Builds can be found in the broadcom_K26 and Broadcom_K3x directory, (K stands for the linux kernel used).
I do not have that particular router so I can not comment on which build to use, I do have a Linksys E2000 which is more or less from the same era (old) and that runs good on the the recent 30826_K3X build.

Hmm a shame the wiki is not being updated, and surpising. I would do so if I had knowledge that I was certain of (like which build I am using without issues etc).

I did some digging and I did find this on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqoXhOGemH0

He used the files:

dd-wrt base firmware
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2015/12-10-2015-r28493/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-28493_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx

dd-wrt Mega firmware
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2015/12-10-2015-r28493/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-28493_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega.bin

So it looks like there is a 12-2015 version that works. But I am leery of trying it without more information. Of course I can always go back, but at the moment trying to find out if I need to, or if it will create more problems than fix.

Btw I checked the beta folder and found ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2016/11-14-2016-r30880/broadcom_K26/ that is the latest that *should* work. But not wanting to try it without conformation. Smile

I'm currently using 30534 K3.1 Big after reading a lot around here. It seems to be the new "recommended" stable one for RT-N16. The kernel jumps from K2.6 to K3.x so you must upgrade to 21530 K3 first.

If you already have a version of DD-WRT with Kernel 2.6 installed, reset, install 21530 K3, reset, and then install 30534 K3, reset.

If you don't have DD-WRT installed, install dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx first using the instructions in the Wiki: https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N16. BTW, trailed builds (.trx) are only for switching from Asus firmware to DD-WRT. Once you have DD-WRT installed, use a generic Broadcom build (.bin).
