RT-AC5300 has a dual core 1.4GHz CPU which is pretty fast for residential router by today's standard. Let's do some troubleshooting first. What is the Internet speed under the following cases:
1. Without VPN.
2. With OpenVPN client running on a reasonably fast PC.
3. With OpenVPN client running on the router.
If the above tells you that the bottleneck is not related to your ISP nor the VPN provider. The next option may be to try pfsense on a PC as the router.
I am a bit surprise that RT-AC5300 with a dual core 1.4GHz CPU can't handle 25Mb/s with OpenVPN. I think I will move this thread to the Broadcom sub-forum and let others including the RT-AC5300 owner to comment. May be it is a good idea if you can provide information on which build that you are using. In case it is an old build, you may want to try the more recent builds and see if it makes a difference or not.

Even a R7000 does around 50Mbps as VPN client. Either wrong settings or the test was somehow flawed, e.g. router already had other things to do etc. TH AC5300 should easily do 50Mbps. _________________ KONG PB's: http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/

I'm sorry but it will not handle it. What is the most powerful router I can buy for enterprise or residential running dd-wrt that can handle it? I'm thinking about picking up an R9000.
I have an R6400 which easily maxes out my internet speed of 40/4MB with my PIA VPN. Altough it is not very fast by modern standards.
If you want a really fast router with regard to processing power then skip the Broadcom routers.
I think one of the fastest supported routers is the R7800 _________________ Routers:Netgear R7000, R6400v1, R6400v2, EA6900 (XvortexCFE), E2000, E1200v1, WRT54GS v1.

As Kong and others pointed out, many less powerful router than RT-AC5300 can handle over 50Mb/s with OpenVPN client so there is no reason why your RT-AC5300 can't handle 25Mb/s with OpenWPN client. Hence, it is better to figure out why your RT-AC5300 has such poor OpenVPN client performance instead of looking for another router.
My suggestion is to first upgrade your router to latest Kong build which can be found here: http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/ and then setup the router real simple so that it is not running any other fancy stuffs besides OpenVPN client and see how it performs.
