Ok, so I have a lot of dumb questions. In my village in the UK we are just about to get fixed wireless internet that will provide up to 100Mbps (probably more like 60 to 80Mbps). This is up from the 3Mbps DSL I get today - yes, you read that correctly. I like to protect my privacy so use a VPN. This is even more important now that the UK government is passing a new Internet snooping charter. I want the VPN to cover the whole LAN and have used DD-WRT and Tomato on routers before. The problem is that as far as I am aware consumer grade routers are not powerful enough for VPN’s at 80Mbps.

So the new plan is to build an x86 router. There are a number of options like DD-WRT, OpenWRT, pfSense etc. I have yet to research properly but I think DD-WRT will suit my needs and I am familiar with it from routers. I could use almost any PC with dual NICs I guess but even a SFF PC will be bigger than I would like and will be power hungry (watts). However something like a Pentium 4 is dirt cheap and should have ample grunt for the VPN. I have however been looking at the PC-Engines mini headless PCs. These can run DD-WRT but I have no idea what VPN throughput I might achieve? What about https://linitx.com/product/pcengines-pc-engines-apu2-b2-system-board-with-2gb-ram/14615. Will this handle a VPN at 80Mbps? Any advice / recommendations? My current VPN provider might not allow me to use the full bandwidth but I can always change provider. My only reason for running DD-WRT is probably the router based VPN.

Thanks in advance, BM.

With Astrill VPN you just install a app on your dd-wrt router

Yes it should work just fine. Plus you have more storage on your x86 system than a normal router which has limited flash space to install packages. Just follow the dd-wrt directions to install it.

Anybody can confirm what protocols can be used in this Astrill applet in DD-wrt x86_64?

Are there RouterPRO TCP & RouterPro UDP?
Only OpenVPN TCP & OpenVPN UDP?
