Hi, I'm willing to buy an Asus RT-AC68U to connect to my IPS modem/router, I would like to install dd-wrt too by I'm not really sure of the steps (I don't really want to brick it since it's a bit expensive).

This page just says to flash the firmware via the web page: https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-AC68U

However, this mentioned additional steps: https://elatov.github.io/2014/11/dd-wrt-on-asus-rt-ac68u-router/

I don't really know which is the recommended build, also what are Kong builds?
How about this too? http://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2017/02-07-2017-r31277/asus-rt-ac68u/

Thanks

I also bought this router 1 week ago.

I did step as advised here: http://elatov.github.io/2014/11/dd-wrt-on-asus-rt-ac68u-router/

firstly installed Brainslayer firmware ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2016/09-29-2016-r30709/asus-rt-ac68u/asus_rt-ac68u-firmware.trx

after that I installed last version of kong's firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r31205M kongac (02/03/17)

After I made ISP router as Subnet 192.168.1.1 and dd-wrt router as Subnet 192.168.2.1

Between firmwares I did
root@DD-WRT:~# erase nvram
root@DD-WRT:~# reboot

it works so far, even I still have some issues with VPN setting I tried to install.

Nice! So, I need to download the last build from here: http://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2017/02-07-2017-r31277/asus-rt-ac68u/asus_rt-ac68u-firmware.trx

Erase NVRAM, reboot, flash.

Then I download this build: http://ddwrt-kong.clonevince.fr/31205/dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD.bin

Erase NVRAM, reboot, flash.

And I'm done, right?

I didnt install first this one you mentioned: DD-WRT build 31277 - 2017/02/07

firstly installed Brainslayer firmware ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2016/09-29-2016-r30709/asus-rt-ac68u/asus_rt-ac68u-firmware.trx

and after kong's firmware.

You can try to install DD-WRT build 31277 - 2017/02/07 first and after kong or wait once someone can advise your further.

Ok, I will install the build 20162909 since you reportd it worked. Just one more question, what's the dirrence between Brainslayer firmware and Kong?

I didnt go through and compare between Brainslayer and Kong and also the one you can download from dd-wrt. I just did as advised.

I prefer that someone can explain you in more details.

Is there anyone who know the difference?

Kong's build and Brainslayer's builds are about the same. Kong's will have some fixes/changes that aren't necessarily in Brainslayer's yet as he will do them before submitting them to the main repo. Kong's also has an update utility ddup. Kong also typically does testing on the routers he provides builds for.

Did you install the firmware finally?

I have an issue with this ASUS router, that after dd-wrt installed it shows in settings that 5Ghz works but the led light is switched off.

Does your router 5Ghz channel works after firmware?

The led being off is a known issue. Just cosmetic.
