I've been following the DD-WRT updates for the WRT1900ACS router as I had wanted to get one for some time. However with Kong detailing why he was no longer associating his name with the firmware for the 1900ACS, along with so many others having issues. I wanted to know what would be a good brand/model to get in replace of the WRT1900ACS?
The used price point of the 1900ACS seemed good at around $100. The 3200ACS is just to expensive new, and even used I'm shying from it based on the issues here in the forum with it.
The Netgear R7800 was recommended by Kong, but holy cow it's expensive both used and new. Any thoughts on a good replacement that would be cost effective??
After Marvel radio full disaster and negative comments from Kong about Marvel (WRTs) and Atheros i will newer consider any other chip suppler except Broadcom as real open source ready.
Netgear R8500 and R9000 looks like a best but most expensive option to try right now
Look on eBay. A lot, I mean a lot of r8500 stuck in a reboot loop. I've bought 3 myself to try to fix with kongs help and he said it is bad hardware.
Kong has had nothing but good to say about the r7800. I have an r7800 and had an r7500v2. The r7500v2 worked just as well for my use. _________________ I am far from a guru, I'm barely a novice.
Thank you for sharing your experience and will consider Netgear 7800 or 9000. Will never buy any device from Linksys coz i had problems with e3000, e4200 and WRT`s. Enough is enough
Having had a R7000 I found that even overclocked it suffered when being used as a VPN client.
I then deliberated for a long time with the Linksys flavours of routers, they initially seemed very promising to use for a VPN client.
However the more that I read about the WRT3200 the more that the R7800 became a preferred choice.
The R7800 came on offer in the UK at Amazon and so I grabbed one.
So far I'm happy enough as it performs well for my VPN needs.
I need to learn how to let one device to go through my WAN rather than the VPN, but that would have applied to any DD-WRT router.
Surprisingly though the R7000 seemed to have the better WiFi range, perhaps because it wasn't "locked down" like the R7800.
What is real performance, stability and range for r7800 compare to WRT900acs? I was always surprise by WRT1900acs range and stability finally looks very good.
I dont care about VPN and NAS functionality cos using more appropriate separate devices and router is router only.
Thanks for the heads up on the differences of the CPU in the v1 and v2 router. I found one on ebay and the seller emailed back that it is a V2 for a very reasonable price. I'll snag it and use it as a replacement.
Man I miss the days of when Linksys had quality items like the WRT54GS and WRT300N.
