Hi!
Been trying to figure it out from the router database and from the FTP but I am not sure I am understanding it correctly.
Is it possible that the last version that works with this hardware is v24 sp2? (this is the one I have installed since 2009).
Are there any newer versions that could work with this?
Thanks!

You must install beta version for newer firmware.
Yours will be under broadcom folder and I think using 2.4 linux kernel.
broadcom_K26 uses 2.6 linux kernel but I didn't see your router in there.
broadcom_K3X has mostly mega firmwares. These are for routers with 8+ MB flash ROM. Uses 3.x linux kernel.
I found wrt54g.bin in broadcom folder below:
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/04-06-2017-r31825/broadcom/
I use r31825 on some different routers and working very well for me. But you can go with latest beta if you like.
Beta firmwares sometimes break over time and there is small risk firmware could semi-brick your router. So, install beta firmware at your own risk.

Do not use wrt54g.bin on the Gv4 , and yes, k26 does not work for old WRT's; only use the /broadcom folder. . mrjcd wrote: ./betas/2017/05-02-2017-r31924/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic.bin
Note: Once you have DD running with the mini generic, you might be able to flash the smaller standard/generic firmware (voip/vpn) if desired (see Types in my footer for an ~outdated reference). It must fit your 4MB flash, but if its too big, it will just fail to flash (at least it does with the various WRT54*'s I've used, but that doesn't include the Gv4).
E.g. for ./05-02-2017-r31924/broadcom/

I think the message is "update error"
There is N0 8 MB flash WRT54G v5.
The v5 WRT54G & GS are only 2 MB flash and will only take a micro build.

33342 is a bad build ; you're lucky it couldn't fit. As mrjcd noted, that model is 8MB RAM , not flash. Use 33215 micro . You could compress the CFE, overclock to 250 MHz, and extract vpn from the vpn build (I had a recent post regarding the mod toolkit for that), but even if that all works (and fit), VPN would be incredibly slow.
