My internet connection typically yields 100 Mbps without any VPN running. I have Nord as my provider and they have a windows app to let you easily connect. I also successfully installed and configured openvpn on my Netgear R7800. When using the windows app I get between 60 and 70 Mbps, but using the Netgear R7800 it drops to around 35 Mbps. These numbers are from being connected to the same server within minutes of each other. I've experimented with different servers and get similar results. I can really live with 60-70 Mbps, but 35 is pretty weak.

What can explain such a difference in speeds to the same server at the same time? Are there things I can change in the openvpn to make it faster?

Thanks

The R 7800 is a really fast router (CPU wise) and is reported to do 300Mb/s when running VPN (AES 128 encryption). So perhaps something wrong in your settings?
Which version are you using?
Did you erase NVRAM when setting up and configure manually?
There are threads about the best settings for Nord VPN so google these

I have a R6400 which maxes out my ISP at 40MB/s when running VPN (Private internet Access))

I think Nord wil want you to use LZO compression: yes
This will probably not do anything for your speed problem.
I hope @Sploit (one of the resident VPN guru's) can give you some advice.

One thing you can try is to use a diffent port and protocol. Some providers are throtling some ports. (The app on your PC uses maybe an other port/protocl)

My provider in France even blocks UDP 1194 and 1198, and I have to use TCP port 80 to use VPN
