Hello experts,

My RT-N16 (running on DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/07/10) mega) is not that stable and it sometimes asks for wireless connection password when I am trying to connect. I do save my password in clients but when encounter this issue, I have to reboot the router then everything is back to normal.

I tried to export the syslog to an external syslog server and expected to see some logs for troubleshooting but looked like no such logs for wireless authentication and valid system logs for analysis.

Does anyone have advices on this issue and appreciate for any comments.

Best Regards,
Chen

You mean a RT-N16? Regardless, that is a bad build.
This applies the same: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1081224#1081224

Search "New build" or model-specific threads. If its an N16:

Do a reset after flashing a new build, before manual setup.

An often recommended build for the Asus RT-N16 is below.

I 2nd Kong's 22000+. I have 2 deployed RT-N16 in set it and forget it situations. I haven't not gotten a call on those units at all. The only thing is that I schedule a reboot on Early Morning Sunday's just to give the perception of it operating "fresh"

Also, when I first bought my RT-N16 some of the big issues back then was power supply, heat and caps. I have read hours of article for both sides regarding the power supply. To me an upgraded power supply costs like 13$ USD which for a lifeline piece of equipment is a very small cost. The RT-N16 did get warm though. I doubt it got hot enough to do any damage but again internet is important in anyone's household so another 13$ laptop cooler was a small expense to not have to deal with the irritation of people complaining that there is no internet. Lastly, at the time that I was doing my research, people were saying that some generations of the unit was susceptible to blown caps. I have never had a blown cap with the 3 units that I have and 2 are still in deployment.

If your unit is not stable, it may not just be the firmware. Smell around the top to see if you can smell that all familiar electronic burnt smell. if you do then you might have a blown cap. If this is the case, there are tutorials on how to replace them and information on a better cap to buy in the case yours is blown. Hope this information helps out man.

Thanks for all the comments !

I was trying to flash to kingkong-nv32k-broadcom but I got even worse.
After that, only LAN/WLAN is working but I couldn't connect the WAN at all.
My DDWRT router was 192.168.1.7 and it just could not ping to 192.168.1.1 which is the ISP router.

After falling back to the original code dd-wrt.v24-14896_NEWD-2_K2.6_big, WAN was back to normal. Is the kingkong-nv32k-broadcom the correct one for my Asus RT-N16 ?

And sorry for the typo, I mean to Asus RT-N16.

Thanks !

Don't use 14896; at least use 14929! And reset after flash, then manually set up.

Yup:
Kong's Readme wrote:

Did you reset after flashing?

If you edit your first post, you can edit the Subject to fix it. Smile

I'm not an expert, but I suffered through a lot of pain with the RT-N16.

One thing that I'll share about it: if you have tons of settings and data (long scripts, big SSH keys plus tons of DNS entries), it's possible to overflow the NVRAM of the RT-N16 easily, and cause the router to reset itself to a bare DD-WRT install (guessing it's bare - it looks and acts it, but since I got to it accidentally, I wouldn't trust it to be a stable wipe).

It's probably possible to do this with anything, but depending upon your circumstances, the RT-N16 may be more vulnerable.

I'd turn of logging immediately (I think logs are actually regular RAM, tho...), and think about a different unit if you need to make a bunch of settings - or trim your settings way down. DNS entries were my big problem (and a PITA to maintain a bunch in DD-WRT).

I eventually made sure my next router had a ton more NVRAM, but you could also install a separate DNS on another device you're running 24x7 (say, a NAS...) to handle local DNS.

Look around on the forum for anything you can do to save NVRAM on the thing.

Good luck - it works well when it's working well!
