I looked at the specific page for it. It has a link to DD-WRT.v24_mini_wrt54g.bin, but the link does not work. On the download page, I see DD-WRT.v24.generic.bin and DD-WRT.V24_13064_vint.openVPN.bin, which seem to me would work.
I could use some guidance on what firmware builds to install.
I am doing this in order to install IPVanish onto a router.

You can overclock it to 250 MHz (stock speed is 216MHz for v2.2), which will help, but likely not as much as you want. _________________ #NAT/SFE/CTF: limited speed w/ DD#Repeater issues#DD-WRT info: FAQ, Builds, Types, Modes, Changes, Demo#

I strongly advise to get a dual core router for VPN.
Different ovpn settings / different providers will give different results ... I have no idea about IPVanish setup but most likely real world speeds w/them on a WRT54G would be close to 1 ~ 2 Mbps at the very best.
I've had the old units a bit faster just doing in-house test w/ovpn server & client.
The WRT54G is still useful for some things but VPN in today's world is just not something it can handle.
One used as ovpn server stuck back in the network somewheres works great to remotely connect/control your home/business devices or do small file transfers --- but that's about it
Thanks. I don't understand why VPN needs a more advanced router, but I'll take your word for it.
No need to explain it to me.
With IPVanish, you basically connect to their servers with your user name and password, but you need VPN on your router, too.
Would a Netgear AC1450 work well? I am on a fixed income and don't have many dollars to spare per month. I'm trying to find one I can buy used cheap on Ebay. My maximum speed with my internet service is 30 Mbps.
When I try to look up dual core routers, I can find them in the "Supported Devices" list, but there are ho "Hardware Specific" pages for them.
Sorry for the stupid questions. And thanks, everyone, for your help and understanding.

if you want to get your connection speed prolly should get a r7000 or better router.
hundreds post about dd-wrt & vpn
google VPN speeds + dd-wrt
oh the why is --
takes lots processor power to do the ovpn encryption....faster you want ..more power it takes
The Netgear R7000 has a 1000 Mhz dual core processor and the Linksys WRT1200AC has a 1.3 Ghz dual core processor, so it appears that the latter would be up to the task. I can find them on Ebay for a reasonable price if I can win an auction for a price I can afford AND it is listed as a compatible device.
If the OP didn't need vpn on the 2.2 (my situation), what is the best stable FW to keep this antique going these days?
I have to 2nd the confusion comment. Wondering why after 2 decades, the database and peacock doc are contradictory and confusing. The database now offers 13064,14896. Peacock says these are bad choices, but it recommends mainly broken links. Heck, the peacock doc (the self-proclaimed bible) can't even decide on the right way to do a hard reset!

It's cuz the Router Database is not handled by users, like the forum and wiki.
What are you running now? If older than 14929, try that for a while before newer builds. That said, the krack fix for repeater/client modes is in 33772 for Broadcom units. My two WRT54's are on 34311, as my f-i-l reported wireless issues w/ 33772; says it's been fine since. Newer builds have had more issues. I'll try the latest build on my WRT54's when I'm at the in-laws in a couple weeks. _________________ #NAT/SFE/CTF: limited speed w/ DD#Repeater issues#DD-WRT info: FAQ, Builds, Types, Modes, Changes, Demo#

Thanks,
I am replacing an unstable Gv8 unit with the Gv2.2 (orig fw). I have loaded the 14896 mini generic. I was going to try a mini 14929 as recommended but the wiki link for that is broken, and I can't find it in the ftp folders. Have a link or ftp path?
It also does not help identifying by build# if the bin filename does not also include the build#. At the least provide a util to sniff the bin file for that info so you don't flash the wrong bin.
The 14929 is working well, thanks. I'd stay with it, but would like the krack fix. Would you still recommend the 34311, or have you confidence in a newer candidate?

The only newer ones I tried wouldn't let me change the wireless channel (and isn't related to the Save-click trick nor the Wireless Network Modes-related issues, either).
I'll be doing more testing with the GL and GSv6 prob when the next build is out. I'd suggest using 14929 for a few days as a baseline, then try 34311 for a while. _________________ #NAT/SFE/CTF: limited speed w/ DD#Repeater issues#DD-WRT info: FAQ, Builds, Types, Modes, Changes, Demo#
