How would a laptop work as a router since majority of those only comes with 1 Ethernet port and 1 Wifi card depending on the year it was made.

You might be able to use a PCMICA card to add more Ethernet ports. But they may not be supported. Not all laptops have PCMICA card ports either.

DD-wrt is very specific on the WIFI cards they support and to use those you need to get an activation key and pay $20 for it.

DD-wrt is designed to be a Router software on computers with 2 or more Ethernet adapters. Its also for consumer routers and they have to meet certain criteria to be able to work with DD-WRT.
