Question about using pfsense firewall

I'm looking to purchase a new flash router that has NordVPN pre-installed on and uses dd-wrt firmware. I'm wanting to know if pfsense will work on these routers or not, I understand that IPtables is used as its default firewall, but I'm looking for alternative options, such as, pfsense. Are there any other suggestions that others have had great success with using other open-source firewalls on these types of routers? Thank you!

Pfsense runs on X86 hardware. You have to replace your dd-wrt router with new hardware.
