Hello everyone! My brain is completely frazzled from all the videos and different info I have found on the internet of how to set up my router. I'm a total newbie at this so I'm sorry if my questions seem stupid for you all.

I successfully installed WRT1200ACv2 Firmware: webflash image for inital installation
factory-to-ddwrt.bin of which I downloaded from this site Build: 30796. I noticed they also had WRT1200ACv2 Firmware: webflash image that I did not download should I also install this 1?

I installed the firmware successfully then rebooted the router I can see the WTC1200ac router wifi on my computer and I select it but am unable to access the internet with it. I also notice the router wifi is not locked how can I lock it and make it only password accessible or is this done when wired to the ISP router?

Every video I have watched says to install the VPN before wiring it to the ISP router. Does it actually have to be done that way and if yes how can it be done when the WRT1200ac router has no access to the internet? I have used proXPN from my computer for a while so I asked them to send me instructions on how to install the VPN to my DD-WRT router. I did everything the instructions say but how can I test it to actually see if it's working?

I'm 100% sure I will have more questions so any help will be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you have not done any configuration of the router. Wireless, by default, is open on install. You need to start poking around in settings > wireless. There are lots of info on setting up wireless both on youtube and web in text form. Installing DD-WRT means you are going to have to "get your hands dirty". No hand holding like user guide that came with the router. DD-WRT is not for everyone in my opinion.

I assume you have a PC that is wired to the router. That PC should get a IP address and be able to access the Internet. Would suggest you get that working before worrying about wireless. My guess on the Internet access is after installing DD-WRT the MAC has changed and you need to cycle your ISP modem.

There is also lots of good info in the link in my sig.

Here is a writeup by Kong, one of the DD-WRT devs on basic configuration.

The only configuring I've tried to do is for the VPN. I've watched so many videos on configuration and most have differences between them. I'm using a Mac wired to the router and I just don't see any videos with someone using a Mac. You're right I will have to get my hands dirty with this and just go by trial and error until I get it right. I backed up everything from the beginning so if something goes wrong I can go back. I will read up on the links you suggested start configuring so I can get this up and running. Thank you for responding to my questions! Cool

Hi dOug, thanks for the input. I had changed the SSID of the router right after I installed the dd-wrt firmware. That's why I couldn't understand why I had to put in a password to access the router yet my wifi didn't have a lock. Anytime I stopped woking on it I would shut it down. The links myersw pointed me to had helped me a lot with being able to do the configurations so I could put a lock and password on the wifi.

Now my problem is trying to get proXPN to work. They sent me the info on how to configure but it's still not accepting it. I think I'm having problems with CA Cert, Public Client Cert and Private Client Key. I start off each with -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- then copy and paste "All" of the server addresses then I add -----END CERTIFICATE----- at the bottom of each. It was driving me crazy today so I called it quits after 4 hours of changing 1 thing or another and still won't work. Have to let my brain rest for a few hours then will try again tomorrow.

OK today I was playing around with the VPN configurations and I finally got it to work. When I clicked on status / OpenVPN it says Client: CONNECTED SUCCESS but now I am unable to open anything on the internet even though I am on the VPN router wifi. It's like every step I take forward I fall back 2 steps.
