a couple questions and one comment:
1. when mtu is set to auto, i notice that the adjacent field displays a grayed-out value of 1500. not sure if it is a coincidence that my isp recommends that same value or if that value is determined by the dd-wrt software/firmware? i'm aware that it can be set manually, but if it's dynamic, even better!
2. i've been running with sfe enabled now for the last 2 releases and i haven't noticed any hick-ups or reboots. do we have an idea of what configurations are problematic when this setting is enabled?

SFE used to cause random reboots and did not work with QoS. But now that the QoS is broken anyway, I am not sure.

When I was setting up my OpenVPN Client for the first time I was trying to get the best speeds so I went searching.
I tried several different adjustments, but nothing worked as well as I would have liked.
I ended up configuring mine for TCP 443 in hopes of masking my use of a VPN and speeds were much better than UDP.
Here is everything that I read when I was learning as much as I could about MTU:

appreciate that. don't use qos so that's likely why i've been good. i kind of feel dumb about the clock though. duh! i should've noticed.

u are working too hard! as i had mentioned, i'm good with the myu setting but wanted to know what was going on inside dd-wrt code vis-a-vis that value in the interface. my isp wants 1500 and when i leave it in auto, i'm not sure what value is chosen. i can set it manually, i know. is there a command to tell what it is set for while in auto-mode?
all that said, since u mentioned vpn, i'm gonna play with that tcp port u mentioned. expressVPN, works fine but i haven't been able to use it at the router level since my streaming devices won't do netflix when it's enabled.

after some additional research, the netshell command was helpful. the command,

netsh interface ipvX show interface (where the value of X is 4 or 6)
lists your paths, state of connection and current mtu.
