I'm trying to setup SSH key login to version DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/25/13) mega - build 21061.

I've created the keypair and pasted the public key into the Authorized Key Field. Using Telnet, I can confirm that the key is indeed in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

However, when I attempt to connect with ssh -v -i ~/.ssh/myprivkey root@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, I get:

OpenSSH_7.2p2 Ubuntu-4ubuntu2.2, OpenSSL 1.0.2g 1 Mar 2016
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: /etc/ssh/ssh_config line 19: Applying options for *
debug1: Connecting to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] port 22.
debug1: Connection established.
debug1: identity file ~/.ssh/router type 1
debug1: key_load_public: No such file or directory
debug1: identity file ~/.ssh/router-cert type -1
debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0
debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_7.2p2 Ubuntu-4ubuntu2.2
debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version dropbear_2013.56
debug1: no match: dropbear_2013.56
debug1: Authenticating to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:22 as 'root'
debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent
debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT received
debug1: kex: algorithm: diffie-hellman-group14-sha1
debug1: kex: host key algorithm: ssh-rsa
debug1: kex: server->client cipher: aes128-ctr MAC: hmac-sha1 compression: none
debug1: kex: client->server cipher: aes128-ctr MAC: hmac-sha1 compression: none
debug1: sending SSH2_MSG_KEXDH_INIT
debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEXDH_REPLY
Connection closed by xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 22

Looks like it's at least responding, but not getting too far. Any idea why this isn't working?

SSH don't work with that older than forever build.

Update your firmware to something within this year.
Probably find answers if you look in correct forum for your model router
