So I am a but confused on how to get this connection to work. I have flashed the kong dd wrt build to my netgear nighthawk r9000. Everything works fine, except when connecting to my cm1000 modem. My ISP has already added my modem mac addr to allow access to the internet. Directly plugged into the modem, I can access the internet. However when I connect my modem and router together, I cant get any sort of connection. What are the actual configuration settings required for this to work?

Verify in DD-WRT GUI (Graphic User Interface aka Control Panel):

Setup Tab - Basic Setup Sub Tab WAN Connection Type is Automatic Configuration-DHCP.

Setup Tab - Advanced Routing Sub Tab Operating Mode is Gateway.

If settings are correct turn off or unplug both Router & Modem.
Turn Modem back on and wait 3 min.
Once Modem is fully up after 3 minute wait - then turn Router back on.
When Router is fully back up - check connection.

*This should work unless some other setting(s) are out.

The settings are already set this way. When I run an ifconfig -a on the command section, the MAC ADDR for the modem isn't even showing. Its like the MAC doesnt even exist, or the route isn't set up correctly. I flashed it back to the original firmware for now and it connects no problem.

Next time in DD-WRT try MAC Address Clone.

What MAC address woud Id be cloning? The one of my modem? And I dont know if that is exactly the problem because the ddwrt router couldnt even see the modem. I know when the modem is connected to the internet it is supposed to be essentially a pass through

You would clone the MAC Address of the CM1000. Basicly it’s a way of 'manually' adding the Modem to the Router if it wasn’t automatically - as is in most cases.

Usually letting the modem fully come up before the router solves this.

My quess is you probably hooked the modem up to your computer first (to test) and then to the router.

I actually connected the router to the modem first after I flashed dd-wrt as a standalone.

And let me ensure I'm getting this novice networking correct. Essentially, the router should mirror what the modem is. The modem is placed in 'bridge' mode automatically when internet service is applied.

So, let me give you a little example. When connected directly to my modem this is "my config" (obviously not for security reasons) from my ISP.

Physical Addr: 00-C2-F2-45-E8-AF
IPv4 Addr: 100.150.1.31
Subnet Mask: 255.255.252.0 <- This is actually the subnet mask provided by the ISP.
Default Gateway: 100.150.3.14
DNS Servers: 71.45.45.8
50.54.65.99
78.55.55.6

MAC Addr (modem): c2-f2-89-45-e2-fa <- this should be what i would clone in my dd-wrt.

So how should I apply these settings to the dd-wrt router? and what other settings should be enabled?

I found the article I used. It’s a Linksys Forum, but the same should apply.

Quote:
In many cases, it is absolutely unnecessary to use the MAC address clone. If you have a working internet connection through your router then there is no need to use the MAC address clone function.

Only when you find that you have a working internet connection on one computer directly on your modem but not when you connect through the router (or a different computer directly on the modem) then it is necessary to use the MAC address clone function.

This usually is only the case with cable TV ISPs. They only allow you to have a single active internet connection at any time. They do this by remembering the MAC address which connects through a specific modem. If you first connect a computer for tests directly to your modem you'll have an internet connection. Now if you connect a different device to your modem it doesn't it's because the ISP has still locked the internet connection for the MAC address of the first computer.

How to remove the lock depends on the ISP and the modem. Sometimes it's enough to reset the modem or to power down everything. Sometimes you have to power down everything for a few hours and after that the first connecting device is the one with the internet connection (i.e. make sure to connect the router then...) If you want to know exactly how your ISP does this you should ask them...

The simple workaround is to use the MAC address clone function. The router "clones" the MAC address of the first computer, i.e. it basically pretends to be that computer. The MAC address is accepted by the ISP and is immediately allowed to the network. You have a working internet connection either directly on the first computer or through the router because both use the same MAC address. (It's no problem on the router because the MAC address is used on the internet port only...).

Of course, you have to remember all this. If at some later time you connect a different computer directly to the modem (e.g. you have connection problems and you want to find out what's wrong) you may "lock" in a different MAC address for your connection and you'll have to wait again to regain the connection for a different device.

But again: there is absolutely no need to use the clone function if you have a working internet connection through your router.

Okay, I will have to attempt this when I get home. Hopefully this resolves my problem. I know I attempted to clone my PC MAC Addr to my router, but I don't think I had the right settings on my router configured. Should my IPv4 addr, default gateway, subnet mask, dns servers, etc all match that of the config for when i connect directly to the modem with my computer?

You can choose your router's ip, but for simplification I’d leave it at the default.

https://www.routerdefaults.org/netgear/r9000

https://kb.netgear.com/1148/What-are-the-default-web-interface-passwords-for-NETGEAR-devices

If you want to use your ISP DNS leave at 0.0.0.0. However, you can choose different DNS Servers if you wish. Sometimes there’s a speed benefit.

https://www.lifewire.com/free-and-public-dns-servers-2626062

Personally I don't like having extra info to remember and I’m a bit OCD so I would try a reset of the modem first to see if you can’t get it to configure 'correctly'.
Also, try your ISP's Support Web Page for a Modem Reset Tool and to verify you have the correct settings.

Good luck! Hope it works out.
