Im looking for a low budget solution to setup a VPN server at a remote location that can only get internet via a cell modem. In particular a Verizon 4G LTE modem. I have not purchased a modem yet to put on my account since there are so many, I wanted to make sure to buy one compatible with the router.

So far my searched as turned up nothing short of $300.00 dollar and up, routers. Im looking for something in the $150 or less area. Covering both the cost of the modem and router.

I have tried taking my Asus RT-N66U with DD-WRT and connecting a modem to it, but had no success. My research doesn't show very good reliability this way.

I would love to hear what you guys think and any suggestions would be appreciated.

sounds to me you need a solution that instead of connecting TO a vpn service ... you connect from home or someting to the remote/cell site, am i right?

There are a lot of problems with connecting an 4G LTE modem via USB to ddwrt.
Only a handful are compatible and on a lot of builds it is broken

Although devs have been working on it recently.

So it is not the router which is the problem because any modern router will do like Netgear R6400 or the likes but compatibility of ddwrt with the LTE modem.
You should research this
