Short version: I can't get DDWRT to install over dlink's new v1.20, and I cant even revert to previous version from dlink.
Last week I let my DIR-890L upgrade from whatever it had been before to the DLink's new 1.20 firmware version. It went through an intermediary version (1.11) before upgrading to 1.20.
This is my starting point:
Model Name: DIR-890L
Hardware Version: A2
Firmware Version: 1.20
NOW I want to install DDWRT however it seems like I am at an impass.
I started with resetting to factory settings.
Things that I have tried that result in "firmware upgrade failed" message:
- Installing via web interface
- factory-to-ddwrt.bin (from the latest DIR-890L folder here)
- dir890-webflash.bin (didnt expect this to work but.. shrug)
- DIR-890L_A1_FW109b14.bin (OLDEST DLINK firmware I can get from their site, per advice to revert to older dlink first)
- dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_R8000.bin
So I tried a "recovery mode" (restart router while holding reset) installation of "factory-to-ddwrt.bin". Web interface times out after loading firmware with no success message, then the power light continues to slow flash orange for 30 minutes, I then restarted the router and it came up running DLink 1.2.
So I tried a 30-30-30 restart and tried again to load "factory-to-ddwrt.bin". Same behavior as above rebooted into DLink 1.2 again.
Is the new(2017-10-11) Dlink 1.2 firmware unkillable???
Am I missing a key step here somewhere? I've got a sick 3 year old behind me yelling at his Peppa Pig video so please forgive any obvious mistakes and help bail me out!
The ddwrt files I am using came from:
"Other Downloads" > Downloads › betas › 2017 › 10-10-2017-r33492 › dlink-dir890l
My general impression of how it SHOULD have worked was:
reset to defaults (possibly optional)
Use web interface to load "factory-to-ddwrt.bin" from that folder
Use web interface to load "DIR-890-webflash.bin" from that folder
Try downgrading to an older d-link firmware using he recovery option.
Or try over serial.
Might not be able to. Like the new asus routers. _________________ I am far from a guru, I'm barely a novice.
30-30-30 reset
Load old stock version 109
"D-Link Router Recovery Mode
Upgrade Failed!"
HOWEVER what is different is that it actually said "Upgrade failed" on this page. Usually after "loading" the page would time out. I MAY have been using Chrome previously, this time it was with Internet Explorer.
Try factory-to-ddwrt.bin again
30-30-30 reset
Load factory-to-ddwrt.bin
Hey, that's different, it actually started counting up percent complete! Had not seen this in previous trials...
"Upgrade successfully!"
Browser timeout (apparently does not reboot on its own)
WAIT 5 minutes
cycle power on router
SUCCESS! ddwrt came up requesting password change
Go to administration page
Update to "dir890-webflash.bin"
Wait for upgrade and subsequent self reboot to complete
"Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r33492 (10/10/17)"
Victory I believe.....
I seriously cannot think of anything I did different other than possibly switching Chrome to IE. However, the 3 year old DID fall asleep.
Now to re-re-re-read the peacock and other pages to determine if I actually want to stick with "dir890-webflash.bin" r33492 or not?
Based on that and on the notion from peacock that unless I've got a "special case" router, I should be loading a generic build, and good comments regarding build 33215, I've loaded "dd-wrt.v24-33215_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega.bin"
The generic builds is for older routers.
Read the "new build" threads to see which is better. _________________ I am far from a guru, I'm barely a novice.
