I was trying to use my ac56u for the same purpose, however I found that the link often went down completely and was too unstable for gaming. Did you follow the guide for linking routers?

It was ages ago but I think I used http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Bridged or similar

Well, I've finally caved and have upgraded to a newer version. After searching for other peoples reports for AC56U I went for DD-WRT v3.0-r31160M kongac (01/18/17) which is a Kong build. I use the AC56U as a wireless bridge connecting the server in my kitchen to the Sky router in my living room with TX / RX rates of 400mb and signal quality of approx 56% which I thought wasn't too bad considering the distance and location. After upgrading to the Kong build I now get this reported:- Shocked

It seems to be reporting correctly as well as I've just tried copying a 8gb file across and the transfer rate is far higher than before Very Happy. Now to wait and see if it's stable over time.

Edit

Looking good after just under 48 hours. Unlike the newer BS builds, no reboots or complete dropouts which was the reason I'd stayed with the old version for so long

Hello all,
I own an AC56U which I updated to DD-WRT v24-sp2 (04/22/14). I have had no success running this with a VPN. So i need to update this to a more recent build like the Kong version mentioned above. Can someone please direct me to the download page/link. I found the link below but not sure which file to flash. Thanks!

I will be buying the asus rt-ac56u soon and want to use it for ipvanish vpn. I seen the guy in this thread mention he had an older build and it didn't work for his vpn so he wanted a newer build.

you provided a link to the kong build
http://ddwrt-kong.clonevince.fr/31160/dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD.bin

I notice it is a .bin file and I've been seeing the .trk webflash build. Like this websitehttp://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices#Asus says "WARNING: It is recommended to use ASUS Firmware restoration tool for ASUS routers initial flash (use *.TRX file)" when I research.Could you tell me more about this as I want to get this right the first time.

I have some experience with flashing as I just did my linksys wrt54g ver 5 today but unfortunately it can only take the micro build because of the 2mb flash size which makes it not have a vpn section, which is why I'm now looking to buy the asus rt-ac56u.

basically I need to know what is the most stable build for the asus that will allow me to use the ipvanish vpn with it and any tips on flashing it. I'm assuming ill use the tftp.exe for the kong .bin ?

there is a lot of confusing information out there, I basically keep bouncing around website to website just getting confused trying to find a good stable build for the asus that will work well for ipvanish vpn

do I need to do the 30/30/30 hard reset before I flash and after I flash like I did on the linksys ?

I really appreciate any info on this Smile

I started with one of the Brainslayer builds from here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads

I'm also running Kong 31160 on my AC56U.

Do not use the router database. It has been said over and over.

Thanks for the reply. I had sent malachi a private message, I thought I would post below my personal notes on it so it may help someone else in the same boat as me.

IMPORTANT - Do a reset to factory defaults between flashes !

Just upload one of the brainslayer builds like this one ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2016/12-15-2016-r30949/asus-rt-ac56u/
Then use the latest from Kong http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD.bin

Al this is done from the upgrade tab in the asus firmware and then from the dd-wrt upgrade tab.

I've upgraded to the current Kong build for about three weeks and upgraded once during that time with ddup. I wanted the DNSMasq and KRACK fixes. So far it runs fine but I'm hardly a router power user. The "Automatic updates" feature in the GUI and the command line update tool ddup are nice since you maintain your settings.
