So, I've got two routers. Router 1 is a TP-Link Archer VR400 and Router 2 is a Netgear Nighthawk R7800. Router 1 connects direct to the internet and Router 2 plugs into that.
I've installed DD-WRT on router 2 and managed to set up OpenVPN with my VyprVPN account.
So it Goes INTERNET > ROUTER 1 > ROUTER 2
Both Routers have Wifi networks and the plan is that if I want VPN I connect to Router 2, and if I don't I connect to router 1.
Only problem is I can't get it to work!!
The DD-WRT software says that OpenVPN is set up and connected but whenever I connect to it and go to whatismyip.com, it says that I've still got the same old IP.
Earlier, I had the opposite problem... I did manage to make it work, but devices connecting through Router 1 were also showing the VPN IP.

How are the routers connected?
What build are you using?
The most simple setup is to reset Router 2 to defaults and connect LAN from router 1 to WAN from router 2, in fact daisy chaining the routers.
That would give you internet right out of the box and if you load the VPN then that also should work routing all clients from router 2 over the VPN
Other setups are possible, you can setup router 2 as a Wireless Access Point, setup the VPN on that and route wifi clients from router 2 over the VPN, but this is more complicated.

If I where you I use the R7800 as my main router setup VPN on that and use PBR to route clients or wifi subnets based on IP address to route through VPN, and then use the other router as a WAP
I've tried this set up but I can't seem to get my client router to work. I'm not op, I have a Linksys WRT3200ACM with latest version of the DD-WRT software installed on it.
When I have the original firmware installed on my secondary router, it works fine so I know it's not a hardware or wiring issue.
The only thing I can think off that it will not work out of the box is if your main router has an IP address of 192.168.1.1 because ddwrt defaults to this address.
The solution would be to change either your primary or secondary routers address.
My main router has an ip address of 192.168.1.254. Will this interfere with the DD-WRT router? I can't change the settings on my main router, so will changing the IP address on my dd-wrt router work? What should I change it to?
I tried changing it to 192.168.2.1 but that didn't seem to do anything.
Sorry for asking noob questions. This is all new to me.

Yes if your main routers is on 192.168.1.x you have a problem.
Reset your secondary router do not connect your secondary router to anything but a client PC. Login at 192.168.1.1
Then under Setup/Basic Setup change the Local IP Address of your secondary router from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1 leave everything else at default connect Lan from main router to WAN from secondary router and reboot the secondary router.

Both routers should be on a different subnet
I've got it working. You were right. Thank you very much. I'd buy you a drink if you were here!
