I've been running my Cisco Linksys E4200 with DD-WRT version DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/25/13) big - build 21061 (dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-nv60k.bin) for years now and it runs great. But I wonder if this older model is going to get a DD-WRT update for the KRACK WPA2 security problem.

As far I can see, I run the lastest supported build for my specific router. (Checking the router database page)

And if yes, Can I download it then from the E4200 page in the router database? I have no knowledge of compiling builds myself, that would be way too risky for my (limited) skill level.

Here is the latest builds ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/
and instructions for e4200v1

and

Based on my experience k2.6 still works much better than k3 for this specific old router.

Yes K2.6 buiilds were faster, however recent K3.x builds have SFE (Shortcut forwarding Engine) which speeds up LAN<>WAN traffic. So recent K3.x builds are faster (LAN<>WAN).

SFE is very important for this router if you have internet speed more than 125-150 mbs.
You can try both kernels but wifi is much faster on k2.6 and more stable in my test and feels more responsive, so i was very disappointed with k3 for this router. Sorry, its just my opinion.
I guess its too slow to support modern technologies and i did replace this router with certified refurbished netgear r7800 ($130) and cant be more happier

Thanks for the replies. The current builds with the KRACK fix seem to be in beta state. I rather prefer a stable build to be safe.

I don't mind waiting a bit for it. Can I expect a new stable build to be posted on the E4200 page of the router database?

It will be always beta because tested by users only. There is no any other option

Please read the Peacock announcement; the Router Database does not have recommended (nor stable) builds.

I disconnected the network cables except for PC, did a 30-30-30 reset, flashed dd-wrt.v24-33555_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-nv60k, waited 5 min, did a 30-30-30 reset again and am now upgraded.

Router Model
Linksys E4200
Firmware Version
DD-WRT v3.0-r33555 big (10/20/17)
Kernel Version
Linux 2.6.24.111 #32873 Fri Oct 20 01:06:37 CEST 2017 mips

I was surprised to see my settings are still there so maybe the 30-30-30 reset (using the reset button on the back) did not work.

However, everything seems to be working so far. Thanks all for assisting.

I got a repeated ping timeout problem, probably because the 30-30-30 reset had not worked.

I did a factory reset and another restart and it seems to be working now.

Hi, I am sorry to say that I'm still confused. I've looked on the link for the firmware builds and do not find one listed for the Linksys e4200. I find many other routers and some Linksys as well, mostly newer models but some older ones in the WRTxxx category. Please help to clear the fog. Thanks.

I'm reading that the K3.x WAN to LAN speed is slower than the K2.6 builds. Even Steve Jenkins has tested this recently: https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=306620

But I also read that there is a speed improvement in the recent (since when approx?) K3.x builds.

I've installed K3.x and tested it using my only available internet connection: I can get 105Mb/s download reliably on Mediacom service claiming to be 100Mb/s. OK, fine. But one blog claimed that K2.6 would be better for those with >70Mb/s connections.

Does someone know the real situation between K2.6 and K3.x? I'd like to stay with the latest builds in the interest of security etc, but I'm also expecting Mediacom to increase my available speed soon so I would not want to be limited by the router firmware.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I did try both on e4200 and k2.6 looks better for wifi but 3.6 will have SFE so its advantage for Internet speed if more than 100.
I am on Mediacom as well with nice 500 mbs and highly recommend you to replace this old and slow router with something newer from Netgear like r7800 or Asus ac86u. Trust me its time to upgrade your network for modern wifi and stable fast router

Thanks for sharing your experience on the e4200. And yes I fundamentally agree that it's about reaching the end of it's useful life for this purpose. I usually relegate out of service routers to the role of AP's, for some lowly tasks such as for security cameras etc.

What does everybody think of overclocking? I see that 3K.x has 500 and 533MHz options. Granted even 533 is only 11% faster than stock 480, so surely not worth it unless it a) actually works, b) takes one from just below to perhaps equal to the ISP's provided speed. Just a thought.
