Router/Version: Netgear XR500 (Install guide by egc)
File/Kernel: dd-wrt-webupgrade.bin (r53708) / Linux 6.1.58 #162 SMP Thu Oct 19 07:53:26 +07 2023 arm
Previous/Reset: DD-WRT v3.0-r53562 std (10/03/23) / no
Mode/Status: AP, SFE, AP 5GHz Mixed 80MHz + AP 2.4GHz NG-Mixed 20MHz, WPA2/WPA3-Personal, 802.11r (FT), SSH (public key), DDNS (Dynu.com), 802.11 encapsulation offloading, ondemand CPU governor at night, USB Storage (guide by egc), lighttpd (using Entware’s php8), WireGuard server, Cron / partialy working
Issues/Errors:
  • USB storage doesn't work for certain devices:
    • SanDisk Cruzer Fit 8GB FAT32 high-speed : OK
    • Imation 4GB FAT32 high-speed : OK
    • SanDisk Cruzer Blade 64GB FAT32 high-speed : OK
    • SanDisk 3.2Gen1 32GB NTFS SuperSpeed : not OK
    • SanDisk Ultra Fit 16GB NTFS SuperSpeed : not OK
    • Samsung Portable SSD T5 500GB NTFS SuperSpeed : not OK
    • HDD Enclosure + WDC WD20 EFZX-68AWUN0 2TB SuperSpeed : not OK
    • Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB NTFS SuperSpeed : not OK

  • Wireguard is not working

Additional info regarding USB storage:
My theory: USB storage devices with USB 3.0 speed (or faster) can't be mounted.
Testing the theory: Put a USB 2.0 extension cable (male A - female A) in between the USB 3.x storage device and the XR500/R7800 router.
Result: All prevously unmountable USB 3.x storage devices now can be mounted successfully (although at USB 2.0 speed instead of USB 3.x speed)

- Q: How to know if my USB storage device is USB 2.0 or USB 3.x?
- A: Check the USB device's specs on the manufacturer's website. When plugged in, Syslog should have the line "new high-speed USB device number ..." for USB 2.0, and for USB 3.x it should be "new SuperSpeed USB device number ..." or similar.

- Q: How to know if my USB extension cable is USB 2.0 or USB 3.x?
- A: Check the ports at the cable ends. USB 3.x port type-A has 5 pins, while USB 2.0 port type-A has 4 pins. For backward-compatibility, most USB 3.x type-A ports have one row of 4 pins nearer to the opening while another row of 5 pins is further inside. Read more at Wikipedia

- Q: I've put the USB 2.0 extension cable in between, but my USB 3.x storage still can't be mounted!?
- A: Some low quality USB 2.0 cable can't transport high current for power-hungry devices such as Portable HDD without external power supply or Portable SSD. Syslog should have the line: "Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?"

Other USB storage users please share the USB speed of your working/not working USB drives to further confirm my theory.

My reporting job here is done. Now I'm shaking my legs waiting for the devs to fix. Twisted Evil

Router/Version: Netgear R7800 x 3
File/Kernel: DD-WRT v3.0-r53708 std (10/19/23)
Previous/Reset: DD-WRT v3.0-r53562 std (10/03/23)
Mode/Status: Gateway (SFE enabled), Access Point (VANILLA firmware,2.4GHz, 5GHZ, WPA2/WPA3, 802.11r), IPV6 (DHCP6 w/ prefix delegation), Entware, DOT/DOH via SmartDNS/DNSMasq, OpenVPN server, Wireguard Server, Ondemand Governor + 2 wired access points (VANILLA firmware,2.4GHz, 5GHZ, WPA2/WPA3, 802.11r), Ondemand Governor
Issues/Errors:
After upgrade, SanDisk USB drive still not mounting with same error (not available). Generic USB 2.0 drive does mount, further confirmation of IONK's theory.

Wireguard server also still not working. "Handshake did not complete after 5 seconds, retrying" repeatedly in the client log.

Reverting back again.

Thanks Devs.

I'm on the newer Kernel (53662) w/ Netgear 7500v2 and I don't know if i'm misunderstanding the USB issue but I have a SanDisk 3.2Gen1 USB Stick which is mounted and accessible via Samba. Here's the relevant dmesg if it helps:

the log shows your SanDisk 3.2Gen1 USB Stick is mounted as a high-speed device, not SuperSpeed, so not counted.

EDIT: I'm curious about your SanDisk 3.2Gen1 USB Stick, can you plug it into a USB 3 port of your Windows PC and check with USB Device Tree Viewer if it supports SuperSpeed? Specifically the summary section as below:
Code:
      ========================== Summary =========================
Vendor ID                : 0x1532 (Razer (Asia-Pacific) Pte Ltd.)
Product ID               : 0x007B
USB Version              : 2.0 -> but Device is Full-Speed only
Port maximum Speed       : High-Speed (Companion Port 1-2-3 supports SuperSpeed)
Device maximum Speed     : Full-Speed
Device Connection Speed  : Full-Speed
Self powered             : no
Demanded Current         : 500 mA
Used Endpoints           : 4
I just want to know if the SanDisk drive is fake, or Netgear messed up the USB design of R7500v2, or other factors are at play here.

This is the "twin" USB Stick as I can't remove the current one at this time:

Code:

      ========================== Summary =========================
Vendor ID                : 0x0781 (Western Digital, Sandisk)
Product ID               : 0x5591
USB Version              : 3.2 Gen 1
Port maximum Speed       : SuperSpeed
Device maximum Speed     : SuperSpeed
Device Connection Speed  : SuperSpeed
Self powered             : no
Demanded Current         : 896 mA
Used Endpoints           : 3

so the USB stick is really 3.2 Gen 1 but your R7500v2 only detected it as a high-speed device. I'm not sure if this is specifically for your R7500v2 hardware, or it's due to kernel 6.1, or other factors. Need feedback from other R7500v2 users. Anyway, what's the actual USB read/write speed that you get out of your setup? It would be nice if you also have the numbers for kernel 4.9 to compare with.

On my PC it reads ~100MB/s and writes ~50MB/s.

I tried to test on the router using:
Code:

dd if=/dev/zero of=./test.bin  bs=1M count=50
50+0 records in
50+0 records out

but this version of dd doesn't output the transfer rate.

A minute ago I checked thumbdrive that mounts fine on these latest builds with the new kernel 6.x on my R7800 to be USB 2.0.
It has a jffs and an optware partition, both ext2, and since a few days there's also a 64 MB swap partition.
DD-WRT has been reporting the JFFS one as ext2 and the optware one as ext4 for as long as I remember.
