My theory: USB storage devices with USB 3.0 speed (or faster) can't be mounted. Testing the theory: Put a USB 2.0 extension cable (male A - female A) in between the USB 3.x storage device and the XR500/R7800 router.
Result: All prevously unmountable USB 3.x storage devices now can be mounted successfully (although at USB 2.0 speed instead of USB 3.x speed)
- Q: How to know if my USB storage device is USB 2.0 or USB 3.x?
- A: Check the USB device's specs on the manufacturer's website. When plugged in, Syslog should have the line "new high-speed USB device number ..." for USB 2.0, and for USB 3.x it should be "new SuperSpeed USB device number ..." or similar.
- Q: How to know if my USB extension cable is USB 2.0 or USB 3.x?
- A: Check the ports at the cable ends. USB 3.x port type-A has 5 pins, while USB 2.0 port type-A has 4 pins. For backward-compatibility, most USB 3.x type-A ports have one row of 4 pins nearer to the opening while another row of 5 pins is further inside. Read more at Wikipedia
- Q: I've put the USB 2.0 extension cable in between, but my USB 3.x storage still can't be mounted!?
- A: Some low quality USB 2.0 cable can't transport high current for power-hungry devices such as Portable HDD without external power supply or Portable SSD. Syslog should have the line: "Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?"
Other USB storage users please share the USB speed of your working/not working USB drives to further confirm my theory.
I'm on the newer Kernel (53662) w/ Netgear 7500v2 and I don't know if i'm misunderstanding the USB issue but I have a SanDisk 3.2Gen1 USB Stick which is mounted and accessible via Samba. Here's the relevant dmesg if it helps:

the log shows your SanDisk 3.2Gen1 USB Stick is mounted as a high-speed device, not SuperSpeed, so not counted.
EDIT: I'm curious about your SanDisk 3.2Gen1 USB Stick, can you plug it into a USB 3 port of your Windows PC and check with USB Device Tree Viewer if it supports SuperSpeed? Specifically the summary section as below:
Code:
========================== Summary =========================
Vendor ID : 0x1532 (Razer (Asia-Pacific) Pte Ltd.)
Product ID : 0x007B
USB Version : 2.0 -> but Device is Full-Speed only
Port maximum Speed : High-Speed (Companion Port 1-2-3 supports SuperSpeed)
Device maximum Speed : Full-Speed
Device Connection Speed : Full-Speed
Self powered : no
Demanded Current : 500 mA
Used Endpoints : 4
This is the "twin" USB Stick as I can't remove the current one at this time:
Code:
========================== Summary =========================
Vendor ID : 0x0781 (Western Digital, Sandisk)
Product ID : 0x5591
USB Version : 3.2 Gen 1
Port maximum Speed : SuperSpeed
Device maximum Speed : SuperSpeed
Device Connection Speed : SuperSpeed
Self powered : no
Demanded Current : 896 mA
Used Endpoints : 3

A minute ago I checked thumbdrive that mounts fine on these latest builds with the new kernel 6.x on my R7800 to be USB 2.0.
It has a jffs and an optware partition, both ext2, and since a few days there's also a 64 MB swap partition.
DD-WRT has been reporting the JFFS one as ext2 and the optware one as ext4 for as long as I remember.

I was able to upgrade successful via GUI from r53562 to r53708
Router: Linksys ea8500 ..WDS AP
After (3) unsuccessful GUI attempts to upgrade to r53708 this one reverts back to r53562 ..... ???????? _________________ ......All GOOD here... Just Handshakes and Time Stamps !......
