Hi.
I'm searching for wi-fi 802.11n router for a few days now and I'm really tired already. What I'm really interested in is: USB storage ability mainly for torrents downloading and dd-wrt upgrade.
The best would be WRT350N ver.1 - but it is not available;Linksys WRT610N and ASUS WL-500W - those are't so good in performance tests

I just had to register and answer because I've some doubts:
-- according to this:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/networking/display/dlink-dir655_5.html
DIR-655 has Atheros AR5416 Baseband/MAC and AR2133 3T3R chipsets; yes, it does have Ubicom 5160 processor
-- some people installed dd-wrt already :

http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r21082892-Help-Me-1000-Wireless-bridge-WDS-DAP1522-

So, how is it going to be?

Hmmm, I too have seen that the DIR-655 board can work with DD-WRT.
user: andreev2001, pulled the "atheros" board from his DIR-655 and put it in a Belkin Pre-N and flashed it with DD_WRT.

I too vote for DD-WRT on DIR-655

Not correct,

He used only the mini-pci card out of the dir-655.

One more vote for Dlink DIR-655. It's the fastest N-router to date, and all efforts should be made to get the stuff to work with DD-WRT. I think it's Atheros Based. My hardware revision is "A3". Would love to help in any little way. Smile

The DIR-655 uses Athero for the wi-fi card but uses a Ubicom chipset to do QoS, etc.

Because of this it's unlikely it will ever see support for DD-WRT.

The D-Link uses Linux internally, they'll send you a CD with the GPL code.

Since it's GPL code, couldn't you get the CD, copy the relevant portions, and win?

No one flashed DD-WRT on DIR-655 yet. I won't work for sure. In the mentioned thread users talk about DIR-655 and other router with Tomato fw. I guess the user replaced Tomato with DD-WRT on the other router.
I do have one DIR-655 laying around. Its wifi card /Atheros/ works a way better with DD-WRT then broadcom one. But the DIR-655 board doesn't.
The board has some debug connector which is not a "standard" jtag. On the Ubikom site you can find a lot of info about the cpu. But in order to start any tests you will need some additional board to be able to debug the router /similar to jtag/. It costs more then $100.
BTW the flash size is 8M. And the fw is less then 4. They keep always one /last working/ copy of the fw.
In my opinion this router won't be so popular soon because:
1. It is expensive.
2. New CPU without Linux support
3. There is no cheap jtag solution yet on this one.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to have DD-WRT on it. And I'll do my best to help the community in developing, troubleshooting, testing etc. But I'am not ready to spend more the $100 bucks to buy a debugging tool. And I don't see too much devices in customer hands using Ubikom CPU.

It is certainly good hardware. The DIR-655 has been the best gigabit router I've used thus far. Open source or not, someone hack it and give us WRT on it. :)

I know.. I don't ask for much.

So what is the best draft N, Gbit, dd-wrt alternative router?

I too would love to see support for the DIR-655 as it was my top pick but I would be willing to go for second best if it has support for dd-wrt.

I think there will be plenty of users buying this router. I has received very good reviews, and it would be superior to all others if it had wrt on it!

It is actually working fairly good for me, I do wish it had an auto reboot, because occasionally it just quits working and I have to unplug it then plug it back in.

I would even be willing to PAY for wrt firmware for this router!

There will NEVER be DD-WRT or for that matter any alternate firmware for the DIR-655 or any other router in it's class.

Most of D-Link's high end routers use an Ubicom architecture - something that is NOT open source and therefore CANNOT be developed for DD-WRT.

No matter how much you donate, there will NEVER be alternate firmware unless Ubicom suddenly makes the code open-source.

Just to clarify since those above me seem to be missing the point.

Did someone say that Ubicom was not based on Opensource software? Weird, I see Busybox, http://www.uclinux.org/ , Openwrt, binutils, glibc, gcc, gdb, ncurses, zlib, sharutils, ctag appear to being used as stated by its own site.

http://developer.ubicom.com/wiki/index.php/Build_and_Load

The dongle seems to just be a usb/ttl over ethernet with a extra pin. Wish i had time to figure out the pin layout but I'm so busy atm.

@got_milk the ubicom architecture is based on open source software. You should do your homework next time ;)

Ubicom SDK anyone? =p

I think it is you who should do the homework.
Like how long time it has been open source and linux based, compare that with the date of the post you gave that reply to...

http://developer.ubicom.com/forums/index.php?sid=e00db732f1825a1c5e5bead05ba6da87

As you can see it is a very active forum with lots of interest from developers.. Confused NOT!
Quite an achievement for a forum that has been up for 2 years.
It should tell you how popular this cpu is among open source developers..
