Iv got a Linksys wrt54gsv7 router and Im running Vista. I went through this guide step by step and when I try to enter in tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put dd-wrt.v24_micro_wrt54gv8.bin I get a message that says "tftp: cant read local file dd-wrt.v24_micro_wrt54gv8.bin".
Here's the guide Im using
Quote:
1) Log into the WRT54GSv7.
2) Under the Administration tab, RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULTS.
3) Go back to the Administration tab [192.168.1.1].
4) Firmware Upgrade via the Linksys GUI vxworkskillerGSv7-v3.bin
5) Update will be successful.
6) Manually configure your Network Card to a manual IP something like 192.168.1.77, then Manually configure Gateway to 192.168.1.1, DNS to 192.168.1.1
7) Hold down the RESET button on router for 30 seconds.
8 ) Wait about 30 more seconds, then unplug router.

9) HOLD DOWN reset button, then plug-in router. Then release reset button after 5 seconds.
10) QUICKLY Open command prompt, and use TFTP command:
tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put dd-wrt.v24_micro_wrt54gv8.bin
11) You will see the activity light on your network indicator "go crazy".
[[If #11 doesn't happen AND you get TFTP TIMED OUT, I had to repeat step 9 then 10 to be quicker]]

12) Wait about 10 minutes, and the TFTP should acknowledge success.
13) Log into DD-WRT Router!!!!

I can ping the router and it responds so I dont think I bricked it. Im pretty new to this stuff so please explain it so a green horn can understand.

"Can't read from local file" simply means you are not giving the TFTP utility the full correct path to the firmware file.

cd to the correct directory or enter the correct path into the command line. You can probably even drag the file into the window and it will enter the path for you.

SOmething ele that might be a problem is that Iv been using the windows command prompt. Is there a tftp command prompt I need to be using instead? I tried typing in tftp.exe in "run" and a command prompt box opens for a split second and then closes. I have enabled the tftp client.

Since you are a beginner I would recommend using the tftp2.exe utility. It's a GUI app...no command line needed.

what do I put in for server and password? Also, when do I run this app(hit upgrade)?
I apologize for all the newbie questions. I probably shouldnt have even started this. I was having some signal strength issues and someone sent me the link to replace the frimware with dd-wrt. I dont have a clue about any of this stuff so m probably in over my head at the moment.

HOWEVER, EDIT to correct error, see below:

on the tftp utility, the server is 192.168.1.1 (the router) and password is blank

Nope, actually do are doing OK. Not brain surgery, though now that I think about it, brain surgery is step by step too...you get working on that flash so you can do a subdural hematoma release later today.

you hit upgrade at the same time you would've hit the Enter key using the other method.

So how many times will the tftp.exe try to upgrade the firmware before it takes? I started it and it's on retry 15 now with no progress. Something else Im wondering about is that when ever I held the reset button down for 5 seconds and release the lights on the router aren't doing anything. I only have 1 light(ethernet 2 light) and it just randomly blinks. No power light, wlan light or anything.

SO I tried it again but this time I unplugged the router. Held the reset button down and plugged it back in. Counted 5 seconds and hit the upgrade button on the tftp.exe program. It says that "Firmware was upgraded successfully". But I cant log into the gui or detect and wireless networks with either one of my laptops. Iv ping'd 192.168.1.1 and I still get TTL 100 fyi.

Clear the cache on your browser.

Or, use Inernet explorer instead of firefox, or, firefox instead of IE....

TTL of 100 means the firmware didn't boot yet. When the firmware finishes booting, the TTL will be 64.

So should I just wait for awhile to see if it starts working or should I try to upgrade the firmware again?I just ping'd it again and I still has ttl 100
