Hello. I am looking to find a relatively cheap wrt54g on ebay. I currently have a v5, which I flashed with ddwrt, and I know that certain versions of routers are not recommended. Which ones would be the best to purchase? What price should I be expecting? I am currently looking at a v8. What is your opinion on this?
Get a WRT54GL they have the 4mb of flash and 16mb of ram. You can still get them brand new at newegg.com for less then $50.
If you can find one cheaper then that on ebay then go for it.
Stay away from the WRT54G v5 thru v8, they are nurtured with only 2mb of flash and 4mb of ram. _________________ WRT54G-TM (Gateway) std-nokaid-build 14929

1) "I coulda had a V8" is not a goood thing in the Linksys world.
2)
3) The ones I look at go for ~$65 and up _________________ Conventional wisdom among radio guys is that $1 spent on antennas is worth $10 spent on amplifiers. Solve RF problems with antennas to the greatest extent possible before increasing power.
For about the same price of WRT54GL you can get a WRT54G-TM with 8mb flash and 32mb ram, a worthy upgrade IMHO. I have 4 of them and love them. _________________

I still think the wrt-300n from ecost is the best deal around. Full specs including a 300ghz processor....but if you want to go over the to the DARK (Ralink) side, the WHR-G300N has a 384ghx processor. I am running one as my main units.
Ask Mordak if all of his TMs work.... _________________ SIG:

Nope one doesn't work but ask Barryware how much he likes his. He says they are probably the most robust routers he has. _________________

Now you're just rubbing mine in my face.... _________________ SIG:

Not intentionally. I still am frustrated with mine not working regularly and steadily. I feel your pain and it sucks. _________________

no the neutered routers are not got for anything but AP's IMO.
They work fine as Client Bridge too!
I am about to deploy a WRT54Gv8 as a router/firewall/AP for my daughter in her dorm room.... got my fingers crossed it will be adequate for the task. _________________ WRT54G-RG

As long as they don't have to do gateway duty they are fine.
I've done some testing using it as a gateway, no issues so far. Admittedly, it has been subjected to relatively light loads. I'm thinking if you only need to support 1 or 2 clients, it could be workable. _________________ WRT54G-RG

That should be doable as long as they are not on youtube at the same time. _________________ The New Me
