Hi there, I'm new.

A buddy and I are in the Army and have been working on using the WRT54G2v1's as repeaters to cover a long distance. Currently we have an older (external detachable antennas) WRT54g as our central router, with a newer 54G2v1 (internal antenna) as a Repeater Bridge.

We are currently covering about 70 meters in a straight shot using the built-in omni-directional antennas, using a TX power of 90mW on the two routers.

It looks like this:

54g1 v8 --> (60 meters) --> 54G2 v1 --> (75 meters) --> ???

My question is, we're looking to add a third router on the far end to finish our shot and get full coverage - which WRT54G would be best for this? We can buy from eBay or NewEgg or Wal-Mart, but is there a special "modders favorite" we could use with an external antenna to get about a 150 meter shot with?

That one looks great...and it's cheap too. Can I load tomato or dd-wrt on it?

this is kind of changing the topic a little bit, but what setting would I use on the intermediate (relay0) router and the final router (relay1)?

I.E. should they be in Repeater Bridge mode? Currently the relay0 router is in Repeater Bridge mode. Should I set it to Repeater mode, and only put the final router in Repeater Bridge mode?

In this setup:

source --> relay0 --> relay1

We don't want anyone associating with relay0, but we DO want people associating with relay1. I don't know which mode to put the two relays into.

All 3 will be in WDS mode. You will need to re-configure your existing two radios. Do they both have DD ?

Also check the forum sticky named "Peackock" for a lot of great info.

MAC address filtering will take care of that for you.

Thanks GeeTek, that's good info. I'll read up on it. Is the WDS much harder to configure, and how will it affect the main AP? You don't have to answer if you don't want, I'll go ahead and read up on it, but if you have any points or hints.

All 3 will be running WRTv24 sp2

The MAC filtering doesn't work on our current relay (repeater bridge mode). It's enabled, but clients with the WPA key are allowed to connect even if their MAC isn't in the table. I read somewhere that it's broken in this release if the router is in Bridge mode?

Actually it is much easier to configure and more functional.

The only version that I know for sure has a functional MAC filter is over 3 years old and prolly wouldn't run on some of your newer radios. You'll need to get some other input from here in the forum, or just start going through versions until you hit one that works. You might try the official stable release, and then duck all the shoes that will be thrown at you by the beta testers.

Which build number are you using? For what I've searched build 13000 has problems with MAC Filter.
