I have a D-Link router.

It's DIR-601 A1

FCC ID: KA2DIR601A1

Can I install DD-WRT on it?

From the FCC pictures I can see it has:

Atheros AR9285-AL1E

DIR-601 A1:

How to find information about the chipsets in the device?

There are several ways to find out what chipsets are used. The easiest one is if there is an FCC-ID at the back of the device. With this ID you can check at FCC.gov for the device. If it's not a fake (what can happen in far east) you will find various technical information and pictures of the routers main board.

If you don't find information there you can also open the device and take a look by yourself - but be aware that you will likely loose warranty by doing this.

With the chipset(s) identified (manufacturer & model) we can now go to the next step.

Is what I have done for the above step correct?

Any update on this?

I haven't opened mine up yet, but I got one recently to replace my old router (just successfully put dd-wrt on that and love it!)...

I'd love to put this new one back into use (it has some page load issues that I have to guess as firmware).

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking as much.

I've read: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-detection

and looked at the FCC site with the only pictures bing the ones above.

I don't have the pictures in front of me, but, if i remember correctly this is the info from the IC's on the board (on mine) starting from bottom left (the small one by the antenna connection) and going clockwise:

Atheros
AR9285-AL1A
D09277C
1017

*****
MX B101736
25L3205DM(I OR 1)-12g
*****

These 2 below are the ones inside the larger metal casing...

*****

PSC
A3S56D40ETP
A10ANC43
TAIWAN -G5 (noted because of the "-G5")

****
Atheros
AR7240-AH1A
F52279. 1C
1012

Let me know if I can help more, I just (succesfully?) put the openwrt firmware on this as discussed in this post:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=80216&highlight=dir600

Using this method:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/d-link/dir-600

I haven't gotten any further than logging in to it, and I don't quite get it yet, so we'll see...

I must say that I loved the dd-wrt that I just put on the belkin "out of the box"... it seems to just work, and that's always great!

Everything except wireless works on the 601A1 by flashing it with the DIR-615E1 build.

More info here:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=510998&highlight=#510998

There was word that Brainslayer added support for the 7241/7242. No real update on that since. The 7241/42 radio is supported by OpenWRT and Gargoyle, and does work on the 601A1, but without LED support that was working in the DD-WRT 615E1 build.

Then it should also work for DIR-600 A1 (FCC ID KA2DIR600A1) which from what I can see has exactly the same hw as DIR-601 A1 :

AR7240
AR9285
32 MB Ram
4 MB Flash

The FCC photos of DIR601A1 shows a DIR600A1 circuit board..

I'm up and going, seems to be running well so far.

The only thing I've noticed yet is that the radio seems to be stuck in G mode. None of the settings seem to permit it in N-mode, setting it to N-only results in not being able to connect wirelessly at all.

Front lights seem to work, haven't got around to the buttons yet.

All in all, it's really nice to finally have DD-WRT up and running on this box.
