Hi Guys,
I've come across an old 3Com OfficeConnect Router lying around that I would like to install dd-wrt on. I've never actually done this before, but I think that it should be possible (some Googling has lead me to find that a variant of OpenWRT has been successfully installed on this router).

I opened it up and found the following:

FCC-ID O9C-WL537
CPU - Atheros 2315A
LAN Switch - IP175C
RAM 16MB - NANYA NT5SV8M16DS-6K
Flash 4MB - ST 25P32V6P

I can pull out my camera and take some hi-res shots of the internals if you guys want.

Is this router supported? I looks quite similar to some of the La Fonera devices (2201?) so would the FON builds work on it? The main reason I want this is to run a VPN client on the router (OpenVPN preferred but PPTP will do)

Thanks for your help!

I'm not sure how to get a serial log. If it requires a special cable, I don't think I'll be able to get it in my country. Is this something that I could get from the OpenWRT project for this router...

I know that that the boot loader is Redboot V0.00.01. I'm not sure if that helps...

Thanks!

ok redboot.
serial log is a log from the output of the serial port.
nevertheless this unit is "similar" to the dir300vA so a first try would be to install this image (NOT THE DIR300 REDBOOT!) and see its booting AND to get a serial log!

My device does not have a serial port (or USB). I'm assuming this means I need to build a cable (or buy one) and connect it to the 9 solder points on the top left of my board that says JP1? I'm not sure this is possible from where I am, I just won't have the parts.

I'm not sure what the DIR300 Redboot image is that I'm NOT supposed to install. Do I install ap61.ram and then ap61.rom as per the instructions for the DIR300?

Would I still need a serial port cable? or would DD-WRT work after the end of these instructions?

This guy managed to get Gargoyle OpenWRT on the same device (different model number because he is in Latin America).

http://foro.seguridadwireless.net/openwrt/instalando-gargoyle-%28openwrt%29-en-el-router-3com-3crwer200-75/

I tried to read it with google translate and it looks like similar but slightly different set of instructions. Let me know if this changes your mind. Otherwise I will try loading the AP61.ram and rom files as per the instructions from the Router Database.

I think you want me to follow these instructions:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/DIR300

If it was not clear already, I'm new at this and already indicated that I have no idea how to get a serial log. Your explanation "a serial log is a log from the output of the serial port." is not so helpful as I described that I do not have the equipment to build an RS232 cable as described on other posts.

Once again, I'm happy to follow instructions and provide you with more information. However I would really like to not brick this router as it is currently in use (though it would not be a tragedy to just buy a new one if something went wrong).

If you think that getting DD-WRT is too complicated for my level of expertise (beginner) then I can back off and try again when I have a supported router.

Thanks for your help!

Hi all again,
I put this router on the side last August and bought another router instead. Now this being a secondary router I decided to retackle it and went ahead with trying to get an open firmware on it.

I put a modded Redboot on it and have since installed several different firmwares. OpenWRT Kamikaze/Gargoyle worked but there was a problem that the wireless lan doesn't bridge properly (see https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=125677).

So I'm back to DD-WRT but I can't get the firmware to recognize the wireless and the WiFi tab in the WebGUI is missing. This is true for about 3 different builds that I have tried, the latest being 14896. Oh, I am using the DIR-300 A1 builds. I think that the driver is not getting started properly or maybe the AR2315A is slightly different to the AR2315 and not supported by the builds?

Here is the dmesg and ifconfig outputs and also the entire NVRAM content (though I'm not sure it is used on Redboot devices).

Code:

dmesg:

Yup, works fine. 3 computers connected, all IP's assigned by DHCP, all 3 can ping each other.

I can try to be more useful, I think.

I'm not sure if this makes a difference but I used AP61 instead of AP51 to flash Redboot even though my device is an AR2315A and I should have used the latter (I think). In any case, it works fine so I am not inclined to reflash it. From my understanding, so long as it boots the linux kernel, which version I used does not matter (tell me if I'm wrong).

For anybody else who tries to do this in the future, I had to use brainslayer's redboot-fix (http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=44506 before the device was pingable on 192.168.1.1 and the whole process is done via lan not wan port. Remember to install WinPCap.

Now back to fixing the Wireless. When I tried to find another compatible device that was built on the AR2315 and had 16MB/4MB (the Fon2201 has 8MB Flash so the image will not fit), I landed on the UBNT-MS2, but my 3Com would not load it's build it at all and I had to reflash the DIR300 build via Redboot. Is the AR2315A more similar to AR2316/7 than AR2315?

If somebody could build a 4MB version of the Fon2201 build for me, maybe it would work on this router...

I would like to reiterate that almost all recent versions of openWRT work on this router and the Wireless driver loads (I think it is MadWifi on the Atheros builds). But the WLAN/LAN bridge fails and the WLAN does not receive packets from the router when a wireless client is connected. If it would help I can reflash Kamikaze and post dmesg and ifconfig output.

Thanks for helping!

Hi,
I also have 3CRWER100-75. Because I don't want it to die i would like to ask something.

1) I want to do some upgrade because the router doesn't support IGMP (multicast) which I want for IPTV. Will dd-wrt solve this?

2) Will other things like port-forwarding(firewall), Wifi, WPA2 support, NAT etc. work after upgrade?

3) In supported routers the is my device but in the database there is nothing. Which firmware is supposed to work correctly and how to flash it?

4) Is it possible to fully recover the original 3Com FW if something bad happend? If yes, how?

5)

From this thread i know that i should use this http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/DIR300 instructions. But this is for anther router.
Which part i should follow? Install Redboot and then install DD-WRT or only install DD-WRT?

Im novice but I would like to have DD-WRT and I would like to help other users to use it on the same device as me. If I know how to do that correctly I will write some tuto or instructions.

Thank you for helping me and answering my questions.
If you want more informations feel free to ask.

Have a good day.
