Okay... my main router is a D-Link DIR-615 C1 with DD-WRT v24-sp2 build 14896. Secondary is a WRT54G v2.2 with DD-WRT v24-sp2 'std' build 13064M.

I have WDS working between the two, with the D-Link on the internet connection and the WRT providing remote access for a couple other machines. Everything works great, as long as there's no security configured, but once I enable WPA Personal and restart the routers, I lose the link; the "WDS Nodes" section on the WRT shows the D-Link, but no signal.

I don't know if it means anything, but on the D-Link, the WRT shows as a Client; there is no "WDS Nodes" section in the Status page. There are a number of differences in the setup pages between the two versions, however, so I would think this may just be a difference in the layout of the status pages as well...?

Build 13064 is known to have issues like poor wireless performance. Upgrade to a more recent one and give it a try.

I suggest 13491 eko.

Thanks grgz... I went with this one because it's "recommended" on the WRT54G 2.2 page... the only other two listed there are 14311 and 14896.

Anyone have experience with 14896 for the WRT54G? Would it be beneficial for both routers to be at the same build level?

Well, I upgraded the Linksys to 14896... makes no difference. With security disabled on both, WDS works fine. When I enable WPA-PSK on both, the connection is gone. Am I missing something? The online help for WDS is pretty vague - basically just says once it's working, you can renable security... okay, I assume that means I set the same settings on both routers on the Wireless -> Wireless Security page? Or is there something else??

The SSID needs to be the same on both radios.

Hmm, I tried that, and ended up with my netbook intermittently connecting to the wrong router and having no internet connection. I figured if it needed the SSIDs to match, that would be required for this to work at all, but it works fine without security enabled. Or am I out to lunch?

Hmmm, does the "Network Configuration (Bridged/Unbridged) make a difference? It's Bridged by default...

Maybe I'm stupid, but I couldn't find much (okay, any) documentation on WDS settings in the FAQ.

Just tried it with matching SSIDs... still no go. Do both of them need to be broadcasting SSID?

For any kind of WPA encryption the SSID is actually a component of the scramble key. I've never attempted to establish a link with the SSID broadcast turned off, but I suspect it is required to be turned on.

Alright, tried again with SSIDs matching and broadcasting... no go when switching to WPA Personal. Tried WPA2 Personal Mixed as well, just for giggles (I know, the online help says WPA2 isn't supported for WDS... just grasping at straws here).

Disabling security on both allows the link to connect again.

I had a similar problem when trying to WDS my Linksys 600n and 610n V1. No security and I could WDS them all day but once I applied any type of security it would not work. I just recently got a Linksys E3000 and it will WDS with my 601n with security so it might be that the 2 radios you have will not work with the security settings.

I had this same problem on build 15453. This is connecting a E2000 to a E3000. If I have WPA2, AES turned on I couldn't get a signal on both boxes. Both without any security worked fine. I tried WPA Personal TKIP+AES and haven't had a problem since. Wish WPA2 worked...

Hmmm, I've been using TKIP+AES... maybe I'll try it with just TKIP.

I think 14896 is still the latest for both the DIR-615 C1 and the WRT56g 2.2 (unless there's been an update in the last 2-3 days).

WPA2 didn't work any better... I'll try it with just WPA and TKIP and see if I have any luck.

Hi all. Unfortunately I don't have a fix for this but I am having similar problems with my WRT54GL running "v24 mini-genric preSP2 Build13064" and a Draytek 2710vn. I'm getting a WDS link established when I don't use any form of security but as soon as I introduce it it all falls apart and I'm left with 0% signal indicated in the WDS status page. I've got my setup using the same SSID's and channels(6 at present). I've googled all I can with no joy - it's driving me nuts. I'm going to head over to the Draytek forums and post on there, if I can turn anything up I'll post right back here.

cheers, w7r
