I can't return it, so that's where I'm at.

Why not? You should be able to RMA it.

Sorry, I mean bring it back to the brick and mortar store where I bought it. Yes, I can RMA which I'll likely be doing.

I checked my vram and it says:

That's plenty (4k).

However is that right after a reboot.. Check it often and see if it changes.

I waved the white flag and gave up on this. I'll RMA the unit and try again when I receive the replacement.

When you get your RMA - just to be sure, I would go ahead and replace the power adapter.

The one it comes with doesn't seem to give it all it can use.

Most of us are running replacement 12V 3A adapters - got them off e-bay.

So I went to the computer store that I bought this router from and they were "gracious" enough to exchange the unit even though it was passed the 14 day exchange/refund period (I was at day 21).

Brought the unit home, performed all the upgrades and restored the configuration. Wouldn't you know it, it WORKS!!!

I'll wait a few days to make sure things are stable but so far so good.

I'll look into upgrading the power adapter if that will help things.

Even though the problem seems to be hardware related, I did learn some things along the way. For one, read the "Announcements". Very Happy

Again, I want to express my appreciation to everyone who helped me along.

I have 3 Asus RT-N16 purchased on different dates and all 3 routers have the same issue. All settings including username and password are lost after a power cycle (half the time) or sending the "reboot" command.

2 of the routers use 13575M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko

1 router uses 13309M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko

All were recommended in the "Router Database".

I always click "Save" then "Apply".

I'm now considering upgrading to dd-wrt.v24-15508_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin

I'm surprised this isn't a bigger issue. My workaround is backup and restore - far from idea.

nvram show > /dev/null displays size 32276 bytes (492 left). Could this be the problem? Perhaps I should remove OpenVPN (settings including certificates) to regain some memory?

It's not the routers fault I think it's a bug try this combo go to admin.
And press reboot after reboot try to unplug the router and plug it back in it will reset the router it happen on my linksys and rt n16 but if you just unplug it it doesn't reset

After removing the OpenVPN settings (including certificates), nvram show ... size: 27447 bytes (5321 left).

So far so good. After a few reboots and power cycles, settings are still there. I'll continue to let it run and reboot (and power cycle) occasionally.

Do you think low free nvram (previously 492 bytes left) was the cause of losing settings?

Absolutely. Your RT-N16 has plenty of extra flash for a JFFS partition so see the wiki for JFFS and then store your certs/keys/etc. on the JFFS partition.

Thanks phuzi0n

Moved OpenVPN cert/keys into JFFS as follows:

1. Enabled JFFS2 Support and Cleaned JFFS2 (in 2 steps)

2. mkdir /jffs/openvpn

3. copied cert/keys
cd /tmp/openvpn
cp -p dh.pem /jffs/openvpn
cp -p ca.crt /jffs/openvpn
cp -p cert.pem /jffs/openvpn
cp -p key.pem /jffs/openvpn

4. Updated OpenVPN Config ...
dh /jffs/openvpn/dh.pem
ca /jffs/openvpn/ca.crt
cert /jffs/openvpn/cert.pem
key /jffs/openvpn/key.pem

5. blanked out cert/key entries > Save > Apply

So far so good.

Just for the record I am having the exact same issue here running:
Code:
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/26/10) big - build 15508M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko

I have spent hours last night and today getting the router stable again. I am not game to unplug the router because I keep losing all settings....

I am at my wits end with this !

I have read all 87 pages of the RT-N16 thread on this forum and cant find an answer. I have reverted to old firmware, re-flashed the mini version and put 15508 (as well as the newer snow version) but keep having the same issues.

NVRAM seems fine:
Code:
root@DD-WRT:~# nvram show >/dev/null
size: 24961 bytes (7807 left)
root@DD-WRT:~#

Any ideas ?

Exactly what build did you install on this router....you MUST use the router specific build of K26 for this unit to work properly....like this one.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/12-24-10-r15962/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-15962_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx

This is for the initial flash only...if you haven't flashed this build...then I suggest you use the Asus recovery tool and reflash with this build...

Once it's loaded...then you can use the K26 big or mega builds on it.

Have had the the same issue on my son's router.
Use the dd-wrt.v24-14896_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx file and make a recovery on the router via the ASUS recovery tool.

How2:

1. Assign a fixed ip to your computer (192.168.1.3 / Subnet 255.255.255.0) DNS or Gateway are not required.

2. Connect the router LAN port to your pc.

3. Open the "Firmware Restoration" tool an load the .trx file

4. Unplug the power cable. Press the "RESTORE" button on the back of your router and keep it pressed. Plug in the power cable

5. After you see the POWER LIGHT on the front flashing two times, press the "UPLOAD" button within the "FIRMWARE RESTORATION" and release the restore button.

6. Wait and do nothing within the next aprox. 5 minutes.

7. Done.

After this was done I was able to flash the BIG and MEGA DD-WRT Image and everything was working.

I think it was the waiting for 5 mins bit that sorted mine out. I had done your exact procedure numerous times over the past few days, but it now seems to be stable.

Cheers.

Hi - I am pretty sure I am running the correct firmware:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/eko/V24-K26/svn15508/dd-wrt.v24-15508_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin

The eko 15508 is pretty widely known as the best firmware for this router.

Asus RT N16

I tried 15508 > no wireless for BB9700.

This works best for me:

DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/19/10) big - build 15943M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko

Tried BS 15962 Mega and Big > no wireless G on either build for me.
