When you get your RMA - just to be sure, I would go ahead and replace the power adapter.
The one it comes with doesn't seem to give it all it can use.
Most of us are running replacement 12V 3A adapters - got them off e-bay. _________________ Soylent Green Is People !

So I went to the computer store that I bought this router from and they were "gracious" enough to exchange the unit even though it was passed the 14 day exchange/refund period (I was at day 21).
Brought the unit home, performed all the upgrades and restored the configuration. Wouldn't you know it, it WORKS!!!
I'll wait a few days to make sure things are stable but so far so good.
I'll look into upgrading the power adapter if that will help things.
Even though the problem seems to be hardware related, I did learn some things along the way. For one, read the "Announcements".
Again, I want to express my appreciation to everyone who helped me along.

I have 3 Asus RT-N16 purchased on different dates and all 3 routers have the same issue. All settings including username and password are lost after a power cycle (half the time) or sending the "reboot" command.
2 of the routers use 13575M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko
1 router uses 13309M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko
All were recommended in the "Router Database".
I always click "Save" then "Apply".
I'm now considering upgrading to dd-wrt.v24-15508_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin
I'm surprised this isn't a bigger issue. My workaround is backup and restore - far from idea.
nvram show > /dev/null displays size 32276 bytes (492 left). Could this be the problem? Perhaps I should remove OpenVPN (settings including certificates) to regain some memory?

It's not the routers fault I think it's a bug try this combo go to admin.
And press reboot after reboot try to unplug the router and plug it back in it will reset the router it happen on my linksys and rt n16 but if you just unplug it it doesn't reset _________________ linksys Ver.1.0 Wds

Do you think low free nvram (previously 492 bytes left) was the cause of losing settings?
Absolutely. Your RT-N16 has plenty of extra flash for a JFFS partition so see the wiki for JFFS and then store your certs/keys/etc. on the JFFS partition. _________________ Read the forum announcements thoroughly! Be cautious if you're inexperienced.

Looking for bricks and spare routers to expand my collection. (not interested in G spec models)
Just for the record I am having the exact same issue here running:
Code:
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/26/10) big - build 15508M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko
I have spent hours last night and today getting the router stable again. I am not game to unplug the router because I keep losing all settings....
I am at my wits end with this !
I have read all 87 pages of the RT-N16 thread on this forum and cant find an answer. I have reverted to old firmware, re-flashed the mini version and put 15508 (as well as the newer snow version) but keep having the same issues.
NVRAM seems fine:
Code:
root@DD-WRT:~# nvram show >/dev/null
size: 24961 bytes (7807 left)
root@DD-WRT:~#
Have had the the same issue on my son's router.
Use the dd-wrt.v24-14896_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx file and make a recovery on the router via the ASUS recovery tool.
How2:
1. Assign a fixed ip to your computer (192.168.1.3 / Subnet 255.255.255.0) DNS or Gateway are not required.
2. Connect the router LAN port to your pc.
3. Open the "Firmware Restoration" tool an load the .trx file
4. Unplug the power cable. Press the "RESTORE" button on the back of your router and keep it pressed. Plug in the power cable
5. After you see the POWER LIGHT on the front flashing two times, press the "UPLOAD" button within the "FIRMWARE RESTORATION" and release the restore button.
6. Wait and do nothing within the next aprox. 5 minutes.
7. Done.
After this was done I was able to flash the BIG and MEGA DD-WRT Image and everything was working.
I think it was the waiting for 5 mins bit that sorted mine out. I had done your exact procedure numerous times over the past few days, but it now seems to be stable.
