Hi Guys

Just purchased the Asus Router Model: Asus RT-N16
I have loaded on, running fine Firmware Version: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/26/10) big - build 15508M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko

Everything is set and working nice and stable for last 48 hours, but mounting and accessing a NAS USB drive is getting confusing, as some of the advice in this forum & the Wiki is be related to older builds.

I have been trying to mount an NTFS self-powered external 500 gig drive with files and folders already saved to the drive, which I would like to preserve, i can format to whatever file system for performance, security & ease of use if needed though. Please advise.

I get this Disk Info via DD WRT GUI

--- /dev/discs/disc0/disc
Block device, size 465.8 GiB (500107862016 bytes)
DOS/MBR partition map
Partition 1: 465.8 GiB (500104691712 bytes, 976766976 sectors from 2048)
Type 0x07 (HPFS/NTFS)
NTFS file system
Volume size 465.8 GiB (500104691200 bytes, 976766975 sectors)
Status: Mounted on /opt

Can someone give me an idiot’s step by step guide to accessing the drive as a NAS so it can be accessed from inside the LAN and via WAN.

Do I need upgrade to Samba 3.5, as i use Win7x64.

Should I keep the NTFS file system?

How do I map the network drive in Win7x64?

If you simply just want to share your files on your NTFS drive, it needs to be mounted to /mnt, not /opt. You can then setup proftpd under Services->NAS to access the files via FTP from both LAN and WAN (WAN needs an iptables omission in the rc_firewall which can be found in the wiki.)

However, since you are running Win7, you need samba 3.4 or higher for it to show up on the network. I recommend you follow the link in my Signature.

You can format/partition the drive in the following way:

Part1: EXT2 or 3 for /opt
Part2: Swap
Part3: NTFS for the data (/mnt)
