What's the best Linksys router that is most compatible with dd-wrt? Something powerful with gigabyte ports that supports the most features. N isn't important for me, b-g is fine for wireless. I'm currently running a wrt300n but want something more powerful and with gigabyte networking. Thanks!

Thanks, a little expensive though. Anything about half the price? Something around $100

Or get one of the refurbs that have been available lately:
http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/Routers/Linksys-Refurbished-E3000-RM-HighPerformance-Wirelessn-router_stcVVproductId110277857VVcatId543809VVviewprod.htm

They can be found cheaper, I recently got a 610Nv2 for ~$70.00 on amazon.

hey you asked for the best :)

N doesnt matter? Are you sure you don't mean "5ghz doesn't matter"?

You can try an E2000, it only has one radio but I get the impression that's not an issue?

YES! I just picked up an E2000 and so far I am very happy with it. It was $98 with tax at my local shop. It also supports the mega build of dd-wrt due to it's 8MB flash, in case you want all those features.

You'll be alot more happier if you underclock the BCM4717 CPU to Broadcoms specification. Linksys O/C's them from the factory and it causes alot of issues.

open up a shell or enter this into the box under Administration->Commands:

Code:
nvram set clk freq=300,150
nvram commit && reboot

That's one of the first things I did, as well as setting the Tx power back to 50 to match the Linksys's db rating (from the default 71mW dd-wrt uses).

In fact, even at 50mW I still saw quite a bit of wifi packet loss, so I reduced it to 40. I now have very stable WiFi and perfect coverage everywhere in my house/back yard.

28mW should really be used, especially if only using wireless Mixed mode (b/g/n) on the 2.4 GHz spectrum..

28?

I have to ask, is there a way to determine a proper power setting?

Like, some formula you use to figure out based on the specific hardware.

I haven't done too much research on transmit power and wifi in general other than the bare minimum to get it working.

Thanks!

When DD-WRT was just beginning, MIMO routers were not available. The initial code was based off the Linksys WRT54 series routers.

It is not wise to run MIMO routers at default DD-WRT xmit levels, without knowing what you are doing of course.

Bottom line,

MIMO - 42mW or less

Legacy routers - 71-250mW

That's all true master man except for the numbers. By spec, the 600N (for example) transmits in the 50-60mW range - the two radios being tuned differently.

On another thread we calculate 50mW for the 5GHz radio and 56mW for 2.4.

The specific numbers really will vary by router and radio, so I think "make it 28" or "<42" not a great rule of thumb. IMO.

Your options are limited as to what build; last time I check only big, STD, and VPN are available. And a lot of the stuff in those big builds goes unused, most notably the USB NAS FTP Samba stuff.

Flash a mini to the E2000 (when one is available) and then used that flash space for a jffs mount and slap some optware on there. As you can see from my sig, I'm currently using big (shows up as mega in GUI for some strange reason) but that's what I'll be doing when a mini is available.

I can't remember at the moment why I chose the Mega build I have (It has a feature I wanted to try out that wasn't in STD, maybe VPN.)

Either way, I have it set up and working how I need it to, without the feature I wanted to try, and am hesitant to flash it with another build just to free up the space, since I'm not using it anyhow.

I did do some reading re: Optware though, and I have to say some of the added features might be nice.

I'm tempted to return the E2000 and get an E3000 though, to get the USB port.

As for the tx power, on an E2000 using the 2.4GHz radio, what is the preferred setting? At 50mW I saw some wireless packet loss, and lowering it to 40 has produced a very stable wireless connection. How does one calculate the best tx power for a given device?
