Been trying to get WDS working and have finally done it! My problem was that I had to put
the second router's IP in the DMZ of the first router. Only noticed this tip on the wiki last night and it dropped straight in! Is this normal? Using a pair of WRT54GS's BTW.

One normally wants router#2 to live behind the firewall. I'd drop back from the sp3beta to a stable build and give it another try. (My WDS connection works with build 5594 but none since then.)

The 2nd router doesn't have to be in DMZ at all...
Most preferably not.

The 2nd router should disable the firewall, be on the same channel, same subnet and the WAN-connection should be disabled.
