Asus RT-N16
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N16
Firmware Version
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (05/08/11) mega - build 16994

Over the past few days I've been having problems with the Asus RT-N16 router. I've had really dropped rates from 300mbps all the way down to 1.0mbps. I just want to tell people what I've figured out. Its possible someone might even give me some other tips as well.

1. TX Power hardly works. I've been up and down. Gives me hardly any improvement.

2. I've figured out why (or for now) why I was having major rate drops. Wireless mixed anything dropped my connection. So its best to have either G or N.

3. Check your channels. Use site survey, net stumbler or something. You need to make sure channels aren't crowded. If you are having rate drops check a few different times throughout the day.

4. Make sure you are using the right wireless security with N. Setting WPA2 with tkip Algorithms on N. Will screw it up.http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless-N_Configuration

5. If you are having weak signal in your house try using windsurfer antenna http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/ or http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/Ez-10/. If you can't build that use a soda can cut in half. It worked pretty well for me. That's the cheap way to do it anyway.

Hopefully this will help some people.

These settings have worked for me for more than a year now.

Wireless Mode - Access Point
Wireless Network Mode - Auto
Radio - Enabled
SSID - XXXXXXXX
Security - WPA / WPA2 Personal + TKIP / AES
Channel 1 - 2.412 GHz
Channel Width 40 MHz
Rate - 300/54 Mbps (depending which client is online)

Clients are mixed G/N

Antennae are from Asustek

Router is installed in the middle of the house mounted on the ceiling

Then I'm pretty sure the antennae on this router aren't very good. I have to keep on G only or I will get a very bad connection or no connection at all. Rate drops from 300 down to 1 then goes all over the place.
