I have a small thin client from HP that I want to use as a router at home.

I loaded the small 1 gig flash drive with the latest x86 version and it wont detect the internal nic, but the USB nic that I want to use as the connection to the internet is detected and used as the lan card.

So from what i have read in the board the internal nic use via-velocity driver (its working as I have a few of those thin client with exact same hardware and thats what I can find from those linux distro)

This was supposed to be fix previously but it does not seem to be..

And when I try to ssh or telnet to the 192.168.1.1 adress with putty it wont work. no connection at all

I used the DD-WRT X86 Full SMP Serial: Console image

cause the vga would freeze adn that was the first one that booted and I was able to connect to the webadmin on port 80..

Anyone could help?

just to say thanks to our guru Sash

After following his recommandation I upgraded to this file

dd-wrt-webupgrade_full_serial.bin

since the smp serial was what worked at first..

Now it wont detect the main nic on board, and the USB is also broken..

Will dd back the image that I used at first to put back in a known state and hope I wont have to register again..

Like I said, thanks Sash, your such a great helper.

with the vga version it wont work..

the booting stop at:
could not find Carillo Ranch MCH device.

pretty funny stuff..

What make me wonder is that I can run IPcop, Smooothwall from this machine , but I dont like those distro..

even a small usb stick that run gparted live distro will work with the hardware..

there must be something wrong..

ok back to square one, none of the full image that are not smp will work, and on the smp the serial one is ok but it wont detect the internal nic of my machine

I am no guru, but I am able to work my way with many things.. looks like there is something missing to have my hardware working with the kernel..

But it is not a very special hardware that I have..

of all the small distro I tested with those thin client, only dd-wrt and slitaz are giving me problem..

But it would be a very good thing for dd-wrt to run on such small form factor without modification just addding a usb nic and you have a very small and powerfull router..

If full clear for you mean remove all partition and start from scratch, I did it every time.

if ful clear for you is zeroing all data on the drive with a command like dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda

no I did not do it BUT that would erase all the info about the registration.. Is that what you are trying to do?

Did played with all the version for x86 on my thic client..

I did zeroed the drive at every try, the internal card was never detected, and if I was using the vga type it was hanging, and never whent o properly booting..

So it looks like my hardware is not supported..

I did post in the sticky all the info needed to ask how to fix the problem, never got an answer there either..

Well Look like I wont have a router running dd-wrt x86..

u can reactivate teh device in the activation center so "zero" the whole disc.
i never used the vga version but the latest betas should boot. if its x86 the hw will work. be sure to have the correct bios settings.

Thnaks for the answer, but it always was the latest beta, unless the web site is pointing me to something else..

It was build 14896

Or should I have used something from the svn?

Never used a svn before to build an image.. this will be tricky..
