The drivers do not seem to be loading. For logs refer last post in:

Sorry for a late reply, other things came in between.

Yes it is a driver loading problem and it is caused by the driver named option which doesn't support the modem yet, we will have to wait for linux general support of the stick.

You could however try to do the following after the stick has been switched into modem mode:

rmmod option
rmmod usb_wwan
rmmod usbserial
rmmod sierra

and lsmod to check that the modules did unload.
The modules are dependent on each other so they may have to be unloaded in the right order, if any is remaining then rmmod it again.

then

insmod usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0257
insmod usb_wwan
insmod option

Hopefully this will give you entries in the dmesg like your other modem:

<6>[ 3075.500000] option 1-1:1.0: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
<6>[ 3075.510000] usb 1-1: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0

Thanks LOM,

Your suggestions worked when I ran them all together from the Admin commands (and I am posting this reply using the MF821 with DIR-825). If I ran them one at a time, they reconnected themselves.

rmmod option
rmmod usb_wwan
rmmod usbserial
rmmod sierra
insmod usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0257
insmod usb_wwan
insmod option
dmesg

Very good!
So what speeds do you get from the stick on an DIR-825?

I live in an outer suburb of Melbourne which does not yet have LTE, so can't test it right now. I will take the router to a friends place and test it so will be able to report back in the next week.

What I just got here is:

Cheerio from Australia and thanks for your time and help.

Tried the MF821 in a 4G area of Melbourne, but not with a closeby tower. There was no significant performance difference between the MF821 directly connected to notebook vs connected to the DIR-825 running DD-WRT. I did get download/upload speeds of 50/40 megabits in the car driving past the towers, but could not operate the DIR-825 in the car for comparison.

Speedtest while stick connected to USB port on notebook:

Speedtest with MF821 connected to USB port of DIR-825:

I will try to get a comparison closer to a 4G tower.

Still quite impressive!

Yes please. I am very curious to know where the limit is for a 680MHz cpu as in your DIR-825.
I have no idea, I would consider 30Mbit as a good result but it may be even higher.

At same location connected to notebook:

Thanks LOM for your help. Any idea when linux are likely to fix the problem with the option driver?

Best wishes from Melbourne.

I don't know when the option driver will be updated, the more popular a certain stick is the more quicker it becomes supported.
It is a new product so it may take a couple of month.

I have been trying to get my ZTE MF821 4G dongle to work on my RT-N16 with FW 18774 and 19342 but it wont connect.

I believe both these versions should support this.
I have tried many of tricks above with no luck.

There are many versions of MF821, if yours doesn't work then:

It's this one:

MF821 Telstra 4G/LTE 19d2:0166 19d2:0257 1 2 4

Which appears to have been added here from what I can see:

That is not what I asked for..
I can not see which mode your stick is in, I can't see the interface list and which drivers has been assigned to the interfaces.
Post the contents of the devices file.

My MF821 also does not connect on R19342.

lsmod gives:

Module Size Used by
option 15056 0
usb_wwan 6528 1 option
usbserial 22976 2 option,usb_wwan
ohci_hcd 15872 0
ehci_hcd 32752 0
ath9k 90816 0
ath9k_common 1168 1 ath9k
ath9k_hw 323808 2 ath9k,ath9k_common
ath 12160 3 ath9k,ath9k_common,ath9k_hw
mac80211 190768 1 ath9k
cfg80211 132608 2 ath9k,mac80211
compat 784 5 ath9k,ath9k_common,ath9k_hw,mac80211,cfg80211
ag71xx 17424 0

and dmesg ends with

<6>[ 27.280000] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial
<6>[ 27.280000] USB Serial support registered for generic
<6>[ 27.290000] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
<6>[ 27.290000] usbserial: USB Serial Driver core
<6>[ 27.380000] USB Serial support registered for GSM modem (1-port)
<6>[ 27.380000] usbcore: registered new interface driver option
<6>[ 27.390000] option: v0.7.2:USB Driver for GSM modems
<6>[ 27.860000] br0: port 4(ath1) entered forwarding state

I can make it connect manually by running the following commands (from LOM) after the connection has failed

rmmod option
rmmod usb_wwan
rmmod usbserial
insmod usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0257
insmod usb_wwan
insmod option

If I save these commands as a startup script, the MF821 connects OK without needing any intervention after restarting or cold booting.
