I have had a WRT54G v8 for the past 3 years running DD-WRT (build 14929 atm) perfectly and I love it.

I have recently had a need for NAS and Asterisk, so I did some research and decided to go with WRT160NL since it supports USB Hubs (not sure if that was the best decision).

Anyway, I've been:

1. reading up on wrt160nl.org but it seems the information there is a little outdated. It also looks like this device is not that popular anymore since there is no dedicated thread in this forum.

2. Reading the wiki and this threadon how to install optware. All I need for now is Asterisk.

3. Searching the forum for the recommended firmware. This thread has several suggestions but I could not make a conclusive decision from it.
I also dowloaded the BrainSlayer builds from ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2011/ latest being 18024 but I havent flashed anything yet.

Now, I'm not a total noob, but I also haven't been here in a while so, I'm begging for the mercies of the good people to guide me to the right firmware. and also to answer the question:

Are the instructions at wrt160nl.org still valid?

Thank you all for the great work you do here!

The info is out-dated but still valid, the reason for being so is that the wrt160nl is discontinued, replaced by the E2100L which i believe is discontinued as well.

Perhaps you misinterpreted what i said, i believe the E2100L is discontinued... that doesn't mean that sellers that have back stock of the E2100L or wrt160nl aren't going to sell them. So yes you can still purchase them, but i don't think cisco/linksys is continuing making them.

My belief in this is because when you go to cisco/linksys wireless routers site, they only promote these now..

Thanks, I did take a look at that thread. I was thinking more in the line of a consolidated (sticky), but that definitely helps.

My WRT160NL just got delivered today and I haven't even opened it. However, I'm starting to think that I made a mistake by ordering without consulting with the community.

On the Supported Devices List, this is the only router stated to work with a USB hub. Is this still the case, or are there better (probably more recent) routers out there?

Should I send it back and order a different unit whilst I still can?

Its not a bad unit, i still use mine for testing, but for future reference as far as USB goes, USB is hub technology so for the most part that i know of, you can use a USB hub on any unit that has a USB outlet. Atleast it works for me on an E3000, WZR-HP-G300NH, WZR-HP-AG300H, WL-520gU, and well you get the picture Wink

So the choice to return it is up to you.

No problem, didn't mean it to sound as if you were doubting me, just saying i don't think linksys makes it anymore as they do not seem to promote it anymore. Kinda shame to because its a decent unit.

So, you still recommend build 16785? http://infodepot.wikia.com/wiki/Build_Links#Recommended_Builds

I bought a powered USB hub and connected two HDDs to the router. The router detects both drives ...

Code:

root@DDWRT:~# dmesg | grep sd
<5>[    6.720000] sd 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0
<5>[    6.720000] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 156301488 512-byte logical blocks: (80.0 GB/74.5 GiB)

<3>[    6.800000] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Assuming drive cache: write through
<6>[    6.800000]  sda:
<3>[    6.820000] sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
<6>[    6.820000]  sdb: sdb1
<3>[    6.870000] sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
<5>[    6.880000] sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk
<4>[    7.290000]  sda1 sda2 sda3

<5>[    7.300000] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI disk

...but it only mounts the first partition of the second drive.

Code:

root@DDWRT:~# mount
rootfs on / type rootfs (rw)
/dev/root on / type squashfs (ro,relatime)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,relatime)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,relatime)
ramfs on /tmp type ramfs (rw,relatime)
none on /dev type tmpfs (rw,relatime,size=512k)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,relatime,mode=600)
devpts on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw,relatime)
/dev/sdb1 on /mnt type vfat (rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro)

The first drive (sda) has three partitions according to this article: How to - Format and Partition External Storage Device. The second drive has only one partition which contains all the media I intend to share through the router.

Can someone please help me to set it up so that I can mount the drives this way automatically?

Code:

/dev/sda1 on /mnt
/dev/sda3 on /mnt/data
/dev/sdb1 on /mnt/media

Thanks for all help!!

EDIT: Build 16785 (DD-WRT v24-sp2 (04/13/11) std)
