My E4200 has stopped issueing a Lease to my desktop. Windows it results in a default ip ( 169 something) and on arch linux whenever I run dhcpcd, I am told requesting lease. 1 minute later I am told lease timed out and dhcpcd stops. My desktop can still connect directly to the modem and to my Ooma device and aquire a dhcp still however not to the E4200

(SVN revision 19210M) Kingkong mod
E4200

Desktop motherboard is a Asus Crossfire V with intel netcard.

EDIT: Steps tried
resetting router's settings to default
30-30-30 reset
power cycle
static ip

DNSMasq is usually the process that provides DHCP services. If your dnsmasq.conf is incorrect, it will not start.

You can telnet in and do a pscommand to see if it is running. Unfortuatly, logging is not turned on.

I have a client that runs v15962 on an E4200 and it has not skipped a beat.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

DNSMasq is working according to telnet however the odd thing is that my router has not skipped a beat in over 6 months. However now my desktop and only my desktop appears to be denied. My desktop can connect to anything that is not the router it appears narrowing it down to the router.

I wish there was some sort of logging for this

I can monitor it on my end however I can not tell what the router is doing, whether maybe its a configuration issue ( odd that it works for 6 months and then quits) or a conflict or something. However I know that the Router is not sending a reply to the desktop when it ask for a lease.

where have you got your DHCP database stored ?

NVRAM full ?

Just a guess.
If you have a managed switch, you could set a port to promiscuous mode and sniff whats going on at the router...

I still have 10 kb of NVram left so its not that and from the conf it appears its stored in /tmp. I also do not have a managed switch, the closest I have is my ooma device which has no debugging possibilities

Hmmm

I'm out of ideas of what it might be.

Some things to ponder:

Layer 1: Cabling had it happen before
Wireshark from your desktop and see whats going on at Layer 2. Do you see anything from teh router's MAC turning up ? What is happening when your PC sends the DHPC request
Layer 3: If you set a static IP, what happens ?

keep playing, learn and report back Smile

Layer 1: I have tried multiple cables as well as multiple ports on the router, this can not be it.

Layer 2: I ran Wireshark as I connected to cable to the router to see the response. I get a DHCP request from my computer to the router once every second. I get only a ssdp response from the router. However I am also seeing
Code:
480   47.136588   Spanning-tree-(for-bridges)_01   Spanning-tree-(for-bridges)_01   MAC CTRL   60   MAC PAUSE: pause_time: 65535 quanta
every hundredth of a second after the DHCP request.

Static IP. Nothing changed from Layer 2: spammed with
Code:
480   47.136588   Spanning-tree-(for-bridges)_01   Spanning-tree-(for-bridges)_01   MAC CTRL   60   MAC PAUSE: pause_time: 65535 quanta
and no response from router. When plugged into either the modem or the Ooma device there messages do not pop up.

edit:By no response I mean no mac pause

just your device and the router, nothing else ?

BTW found this: http://www.koukam.cz/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=41&thread_id=1804

Not much comfort except someone else had something similar

You are going to need someone way smarter than me, but I hope you dont mind if I stick around and learn something ?

It seems quiet similar however I am totally confused as to why this is happening. I would be happy if you stayed around though this seems to be a very interesting issue. Almost appears that my desktop has been mac banned somewhere.

also found this

http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6073

The Spanning Tree Protocol is used at layer 2 to prevent loops and such.

Things to ponder:

Network card drivers
Windows bridging in the network control panel (IP6, Wifi to Ethernet etc)
UPnP ?

It is a layer 2 issue I would say. How to fix, as the Irish might say, Whale Oil Beef Hooked

Good luck and keep us posted

If you net it run, do you see the same MAC comming back and forward in the messaging = some sort of loop on the L2 thingys ?

Do you have STP turned on / off ? (on the main setup page under the WAN connection setup)

Another post was here http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4863

If you have a windows desktop, try with a different network card, if not, try deleting the device and recreating it in the device manager.

Try new drivers, old drivers, another PC.

Must go and do some paid work
